Carlos Oliveira is a mercenary formerly hired by the Umbrella Biohazard Countermeasure Service (U.B.C.S.). He was a member of the Alpha Squad within the Delta Platoon and was the team's Heavy Weapons specialist, and also charged with rear security.

BackgroundEdit

A young mercenary with Latin American blood in his veins, he was active in anti-government guerrilla operations in South America. After government forces wiped out his organization, he was scouted by Umbrella Corporation to join their UBCS special ops unit. He is an expert in heavy weaponry and vehicle operation, making him a valuable asset.

He is warm-hearted and is known to joke around. Perhaps as a result of being raised amidst violence, he is brave and always willing to throw himself in the middle of danger. He uses an M4A1 carbine and a SIG Pro SP2009, and wears a green fatigue shirt and a black tactical vest with the Umbrella logo displayed predominantly on the back.

Initial deploymentEdit

When news of the Tyrant virus outbreak hit, Carlos was sent in with a company of 120 men to the heart of the disaster zone, being told that their objective was the rescuing of any survivors. However, in the heat of battle, Carlos was forced to fight for his own life. He managed to acquire a radio (possibly from his Unit's communications officer), where he transmitted a plea for help. Former S.T.A.R.S. member Jill Valentine heard the transmission in the Raccoon City Police Department.

However, by the time she met Carlos, he was only one of as little as three Delta Platoon members. The other two, Delta Platoon leader; Lt. Mikhail Victor and B Squad member Sgt. Nicholai Ginovaef, had taken cover in a train, while Carlos searched for help.

Jill was reluctant to trust Carlos, due to his affiliation with Umbrella and macho attitude, but she quickly learned that Carlos was almost unaware of the company's nefarious deeds and was simply an expendable pawn to them. The two teamed up and managed to escape the Downtown area of the city and into the St. Michael Clock Tower, where Jill fought an experimental Tyrant known as the Nemesis-T Type.

Carlos attempted to help Jill in battling Nemesis but the Tyrant overpowered him. As a result of the battle, Jill became infected with the t-Virus after being struck by one of the Nemesis' tentacles. Carlos regained consciousness and saw Jill fall unconscious after the battle. He brought the unconscious Jill inside the chapel of the clock tower to take refuge.

Last escapeEdit

Remaining at the Clock Tower afterwards, Carlos guarded Jill, who was still unconscious for the next two days, in the chapel from the Nemesis. He might have wandered inside the Clock Tower and hoped for Jill's recovery on that day although this was uncertain.

Carlos was told by Jill, who finally regained consciousness, that she was infected by the virus. He forced himself to find the cure to prevent her in becoming one of the undead. Carlos was also asked by Jill that if she turned into a zombie then he should not hesitate to kill her. Carlos went to the Raccoon General Hospital and managed to prepare a vaccine to save Jill from infection. He also spotted Nicholai inside the Hospital only to find that he was a traitor that killed most of his fellow UBCS members. Carlos also discovers that Nicholai also planned to kill Jill. He managed to escape Raccoon General Hospital after the building had been completely demolished by a bomb set by Nicholai in order to destroy all the vaccines. He returned to the chapel meeting the still alive Nemesis (he mutated in his second form) and gave Jill the vaccine. Carlos told to Jill that Nicholai was still alive and warned her not to trust him because he was on the way to kill her. Afterwards, he proceeded to the Abandoned Factory near Raccoon Park. Carlos managed to contact Jill and warned her about the presence of nuclear missiles that would strike the city and destroy everything. While searching for a possible escape plan, Carlos learned that there was a chopper headed towards the factory on its way and wanted to rescue them. After Jill defeated the Nemesis in a final battle and went up to the balcony, Carlos showed up and told Jill that there was an awaiting helicopter went by for the chance but she had not believe because there was no way for them to escape. He signaled the awaiting helicopter and it was ready to pick them up for safety. Luckily, Carlos and Jill finally escaped Raccoon City via helicopter and Jill was surprised that the one who piloted the helicopter was none other than Barry Burton. They witnessed the annihilation of Raccoon City done by the missiles. It is unknown what happened to Carlos after the incident.

GameplayEdit

Carlos is a playable character in both the main game in a small part and in The Mercenaries - Operation: Mad Jackal minigame, along with Nicholai and Mikhail. Carlos is armed with his trademark M4 Carbine and an STI Eagle 6.0. He has numerous recovery items but has only moderately powerful weapons. As Carlos, the player is more likely to die due to running out of time; it takes more time to kill a single monster with either the carbine or the handgun than with another, more powerful weapon. However, in Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles, he uses an MP5-A5.

During the mercenaries game, he is ranked at the medium difficulty. He carries an M4A1 Carbine, an STI Eagle 6.0, 90 Handgun Bullets, and 3 Mixed Herbs (R+G+B)

Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon CityEdit

Carlos will be making an appearance in the Spec Ops downloadable campaign for Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City. It is still unknown what role he will play in the campaign, but it is assumed he will aid the Spec Ops in their fight against Umbrella.

Resident Evil: The Deck Building GameEdit

Carlos is a character card in the Resident Evil DBG, first appearing in the expansion set Alliance. He has 90 health. Carlos' Level 1 effect is similar to Ada Wong's, in that he can look at the top card of the Mansion Area before he plays his weapons to Explore. Carlos' Level 2 effect allows him take a card from his Discard Pile and place it in his hand if the damage he dealt to all Revealed Infected is equal to their health. This can only be done after Carlos explores, naturally.

These effects allow Carlos to specialize in the use of Machine Gun type weapons, specifically the two introduced in Alliance; the Russian Assault Rifle and the Signature Special. These weapons, alongside the Gatling Gun from the first set, have their Ammo requirement and Damage listed as "X". This means that they' are determined by the ammo the player has to play with them, and the amounts can be designated. With Carlos, the player can Reveal the top card of the Mansion before assigning ammo. For example, if an Infected with 30 Health is revealed the player can simply assign 30 ammo to one of those three weapons, guaranteeing the activation of Carlos' Level 2. This works well for players wishing to acquire a card they recently gained, but without additional Explores gaining a recently purchased weapon can prove fruitless.

Interestingly enough, Carlos' abilities work well with the abilities of the first Jill Valentine card (based on her RE3 appearance). Carlos' ability to look at the top card of the Mansion before attacking is a great setup for Jill to decide if its best to use a Flash Grenade (which kills Las Plagas Infected instantly; and if she has her Level 2 effect, allows her to Discard it instead of Trashing it after use). Carlos ability to retrieve a card from the Discard Pile makes it easier for Jill to constantly have a Flash Grenade on hand, but this works better with multiple Explores. This compatibility was most likely deliberate on the part of the game creators, as Jill cooperated with Carlos to escape Raccoon City during Resident Evil 3: Nemesis.

TriviaEdit

• In Umbrella Chronicles, Carlos claims to have held a gun ever since he was a kid.
• The film version of Carlos, like most game characters adapted for the films, is different from his character in the game, in both appearance and personality.
• Although often compared to Billy Coen, Carlos has more game appearances (Re3, UC, and ORC). Like Billy Coen, however, all of Carlos's games revolve around the same incident.
• Carlos, as well as Billy Coen and Leon S. Kennedy are the only playable male characters of the main series that don't directly meet with the series antagonist; Albert Wesker, although Leon is aware of him and Umbrella's activities.
• Carlos may be of Portuguese ancestry. Carlos is a common name in all Latin American countries and the Iberian peninsula, and "Oliveira" is a Portuguese surname. Several countries were colonized by Portugal, including Brazil. The Resident Evil 3 manual states that he carries Indian blood.
• Carlos' accent, which was already ridiculed by fans for its inconsistency in Resident Evil 3: Nemesis, has been replaced with a standard American accent in The Umbrella Chronicles.
• Carlos is a playable character in the Heroes Mode in Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City. He doesn't appear in the USS campaign, but in the second mission of the Echo Six DLC.
• It is safe to say that he's the only UBCS alive besides of Nicholai Zinoviev.
• Carlos can fight with Nemesis in his second form in the Clock Tower. He can't completely defeat him, but he can knock him down and in further Jill's fight with the monster, it'll be lack of around 40% HP. Depending on what player choses to fight Nemesis or escape from him, Carlos will say different words to Jill on the cutscene in the chapel.
• When Jill and Carlos first met, they encountered Nemesis also. After they fight or escape him, there are five ways to continue their dialogue. In two of them Jill will react on his joke about his accent in next manner: "What? Keep dreaming". In other three ways, she won't say anything about that joke.
