[edit] Background

Looks like our roles have been reversed from the time we first met, huh?

Carlos as he appears in Resident Evil 3: Nemesis

A young mercenary with Native American blood in his veins, he was active in anti-government guerilla operations in South America. After government forces wiped out his organization, he was scouted by Umbrella Corporation to join their U.B.C.S. special ops unit. He is an expert in heavy weaponry and vehicle operation, making him a valuable asset.

He is warm-hearted and is known to joke around. Perhaps as a result of being raised amidst violence, he is brave and always willing to throw himself in the middle of danger. He uses an M4A1 carbine and a SIG Pro SP2009, and wears a green fatigue shirt and a black tactical vest with the Umbrella logo displayed predominantly on the back. He is Latin American, but his origin country is unknown.

[edit] Raccoon City Incident

Calm down lady. I'm no zombie. My name's Carlos.

When news of the T-virus outbreak hit, he was sent in with a unit to the heart of the disaster in the hopes of rescuing any survivors. However, in the heat of battle, Carlos was forced to fight for his own life. He managed to acquire a Radio (possibly from his Units communications officer), where he transmitted a plead for help. Ex-S.T.A.R.S. member Jill Valentine heard the transmission in the Raccoon City Police Department. Though, according to the Resident Evil book, Nemesis, Carlos obtained a radio from one of his allies, a man named Randy. A very good friend to Carlos, Randy was infected by the t-virus and was shot by Carlos.

However, by the time she met Carlos, he was only one of as little as three Platoon Delta members. The other two, Delta Platoon leader; LT.Mikhail Viktor and B Squad member Nicholai Ginovaef, had taken cover in a train, whilst Carlos searched for help.

He became immediately smitten with her, but Jill rejected his advances. At first, Jill was reluctant to trust Carlos, due to his affiliation with Umbrella and macho attitude, but she quickly learned that Carlos was almost unaware of the company's nefarious deeds and was simply an expendable pawn to them. The two teamed up and managed to escape the Downtown area of the city and into the St. Michael Clock Tower, where Jill fought an experimental Tyrant known as the Nemesis.

As a result of the battle, Jill became infected with the T-virus after being struck by one of Nemesis' tentacles. To help save her, Carlos went to the Raccoon General Hospital and managed to prepare a vaccine that cured Jill from her infection. Afterwards, he proceeded to an Abandoned Factory near Raccoon Park and escaped with Jill on a Helicopter piloted by Barry Burton. It is unknown what happened to him after that.

[edit] Wardrobe

Carlos' outfit in Resident Evil 3 is a folded up green short sleeved shirt covered by a black tactical vest with the Umbrella logo engraved behind and gray pants with combat boots.

[edit] Gameplay

Carlos is a playable character in both the main game in a small part and in The Mercenaries - Operation: Mad Jackal minigame, along with Nicholai and Mikhail. Carlos is armed with his trademark M4 Carbine and an STI Eagle 6.0. He has plenty of recovery items but is quite tricky to play as due to the relative weakness of his weapons. As Carlos, the player is more likely to die due to running out of time; it takes more time to kill a single monster with either the carbine or the handgun than with another, more powerful weapon. However, in Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles, he uses a MP5-A5.

[edit] Films

[edit] Resident Evil: Apocalypse

Carlos Olivera (portrayed by actor Oded Fehr) appears in the 2004 film Resident Evil: Apocalypse. Carlos was part of Umbrella's U.B.C.S. team during the 2002 t-Virus outbreak in Raccoon City. While returning from a mission, Carlos disobeyed orders which were issued by Umbrella, and preceded to attempt a rescue of a citizen which was being attacked by a group of Zombies.

While the attempted rescue was a failure, Carlos and his partners Nicholai and Yuri later received orders up with the Special Tactics And Rescue Service at an extraction point located in the heart of Raccoon City. Carlos later became a rogue agent (after Umbrella failed to escort Carlos and his platoon out of the extraction point) and vowed to help Alice and Jill Valentine bring Umbrella down. Carlos later manages to help find a way out of the city by using Umbrella's last escort from City Hall before the destruction by a nuclear device. When the missile detonates, a shockwave hits the helicopter, crashing it in the Arklay Mountains. Everyone survives except Alice and they flee the scene before Umbrella arrives.

Three weeks after the Raccoon City disaster, Carlos and Jill both infiltrate the Detroit facility and rescue Alice whom has been reanimated using a new virus. Before gaining clearance to leave the complex, Dr. Sam Isaacs orders that they let them go. Once they begin driving off, Isaacs activates "Program Alice".

[edit] Resident Evil: Extinction

Carlos in RE: Extinction

Carlos and LJ were seen traveling with Claire Redfield's convoy. He was bitten and infected by LJ during a battle in the ruins of Las Vegas. Knowing that his time was up, Carlos took a tanker truck rigged with dynamite, sacrificing himself to allow the other survivors to reach an Umbrella helicopter, and safety.

[edit] Trivia

  • To date, Carlos and Billy Coen are the only main characters in the Resident Evil series that have not directly met the series' main antagonist, Albert Wesker.
  • In Umbrella Chronicles, Carlos says that he carried a gun ever since he was a kid.
  • The film version of Carlos, like all characters from the films, is somewhat different from his character in the game, even to the point that his name is spelled differently. His personality is also much more somber.
  • Like Billy Coen, Carlos only appeared in two games.
