Chad Kaplan was a computer technician who worked for the F.B.I. before Timothy Cain offered him a position in the U.B.C.S..

Kaplan took Cain's offer and eventually became the second-in-command of a group which was led by One. The team's mission was to go into The Hive to shut down the Red Queen, which had gone rampant and killed everyone in the Hive save for Spence Parks. Even though Kaplan was the second-in-command, he had seen no prior action and was the only rookie on the team. Despite this, One evidently trusted Kaplan enough to tell him his real name, James Shade.

Kaplan was a competent computer technician (not competent enough for Olga Danilova, who often complained about how slow he was) and disabled all of the Red Queen's security devices up until they nearly reached her room. Unfortunately, the Red Queen activated her trump card as Shade, Olga, Vance Drew, and Alfonso Warner entered the corridor leading to her room. She locked the doors leading into and out of the corridor, and also activated a laser defense grid. Kaplan worked quickly to defeat, however one by one the commandos were killed until only James Shade remained alive. Kaplan only managed to do so seconds after Shade had been cut into pieces.
This struck fear into Kaplan and he was very frightened but he convinced himself (and Spence Parks) that they had to finish the mission. He was not fooled by the Red Queen's attempts to fool him and Alice, who entered with him, into letting her live. He shut her down and her last message to him was "You're all going to die down here."

When Alice, Parks, and Kaplan returned to the other members who of the team, who had been waiting in Dining Hall B along with Matt Addison, the zombies appeared. Kaplan was so frightened by the zombies that when trying to enter a code which would open a door allowing the team to escape, he kept making mistakes. J.D. Salinas impatiently pushed Kaplan out of the way, and he furiously ordered Kaplan to tell him the code. J.D. managed to open the door, but the room was filled with zombies. The zombies devoured J.D., and the others fled.
Even though Alice tried to convince him that they would all escape, Kaplan lost thought they would all die. Soon, unfortunately, during their escape, he was separated from the group and surrounded by zombies, and also bitten several times. He escaped, though, even though he had no weapons, and joined the team later. They had restarted the Red Queen in an attempt to help them, but all this did was release the licker and seal the group in a lab until Kaplan reappeared and destroyed the Red Queen. Kaplan escaped with the others, barring Spence, who betrayed them and was killed by the licker.
While driving the train, the door was ripped off by the licker and Kaplan was pulled out and killed.

He is the second to last U.B.C.S member to be killed in the film.
Like all of the main characters within the movie, Kaplan was based off the 'White Rabbit' from the story 'Alice In Wonderland', thus explaining why he's always talking about time, very nervous and easily frightened. [citation needed]
