The SPAS-12 shotgun was designed in the late 1970s by the Italian company Luigi Franchi Spa as a special purpose, military and police close combat weapon. "SPAS" stands for Sporting Purpose Automatic Shotgun, or Special Purpose Automatic Shotgun, depending on the source. It was a convertible shotgun, capable of functioning as either a semi-automatic or pump action shotgun.

It could be fitted with either a stamped metallic buttstock that folds to the top of the receiver when not in use, and with a pistol grip made of plastic. Solid plastic buttstocks with pistol grips were also available.

The gun uses an 8 round tube magazine, however some are modified to hold only 5 rounds.

For more information on the Franchi SPAS-12, see the Franchi SPAS-12 article at Gunpedia.

[edit] In Resident Evil

The SPAS-12 is featured as the primary shotgun in Code: Veronica, Survivor 2, Resident Evil: Dead Aim, Resident Evil Outbreak and Resident Evil Outbreak File 2. In all cases, the SPAS-12 can only be used as a pump-action shotgun, and the semi-automatic function is never acknowledged. This gun is also never seen with a stock ingame.

Gamplay trailers for Darkside Chronicles show the SPAS-12.
