The Gatling Gun is a secret weapon found in Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3, and Resident Evil 5. It has infinite ammunition and has an incredibly fast rate of fire. The player is able to mow down any enemy with ease in only a few seconds. The only draw back is that it takes a moment for the weapon's barrels to spool up and then another few seconds for the turret to begin to fire. This means that you must fight enemies from a distance. In Resident Evil 5, the bullets are the same as the ones fired out of
Gatling-Turrets, which appear to have tracers and move very slow compared to the almost instant hit of other weapons. The spool-up time is also reduced to about 1.5 seconds and the individual bullets do 450 damage, only taking about 2-3 bullets to kill a single Majini on Veteran difficulty, coupled with its high rate of fire, this weapon is extremely dangerous. Its only drawbacks is while its equipped, Chris moves slower and the massive metal backpack feeding its limitless ammo supply somewhat blocks the view but also protects you from bullets and some melee attacks. It also has horrendous accuracy, so distant enemies will most likely not be hit.
To obtain it in Resident Evil 2, beat the second scenario in less than 2 1/2 hours without saving and get an A ranking.
To obtain it in Resident Evil 3, get $3000 in the bonus Mercenaries mini-game and buy it. Load the game and choose 'Restart'.
To obtain it in Resident Evil 5, fully upgrade the Vz61 Machine Gun and purchase it from the shop for 50,000 gold. Only Chris Redfield is strong enough to carry the Gatling Gun. It is the equivilent of Sheva Alomar's Longbow.
The Gatling Guns used in the Resident Evil Series either are or are based off of the M134 Minigun, a 7.62 caliber, electric powered rotary weapon originally manufactured by General Electric Co. in 1963, and is currently manufactured by Dillon Aero Inc. The GE-produced models featured an adjustable cycle rate of either 4,000 or 6,000 rounds per minute, while the Dillon models feature a less devastating yet more manageable 3,000 rounds per minute. It should be noted that the fire rate of the Gatling Guns featured in Resident Evil all have a cycle rate that has been reduced to approximately 750 to 1,000 rounds per minute for better recoil management. The M134 can be used with a backpack-contained battery and ammunition reserve like the one seen in Resident Evil 5, but the weight and intense recoil limits its practicality.
The bullets fired from the one used by Chris Redfield and Sheva Alomar, both the portable and the mounted ones, are extremely slow and inacurate to the point where it's speed is comparable to a rock thrown by someone.
It should also be noted that Gatling Gun refers to the larger, aircraft-mounted versions of the weapon, not man portable versions. The correct term for the man-portable version is "minigun".
