9x19mm Parabellum

9mm Luger Round (second round from the right)

The 9x19mm Parabellum is a pistol cartridge introduced in 1902 by the German weapons manufacturer Deutsche Waffen und Munitionsfabriken (DWM) for their Luger pistol. Because of this, it is commonly called the 9mm Luger cartridge. Its parent cartridge was the 7.65x22mm Parabellum, itself a descendant of the earlier 7.65x25mm Borchardt cartridge. The 9mm Parabellum is commonly used in pistols, submachine guns and carbines.

[edit] Packaging

The ammo usually comes in a red box and can sometimes be very noticeable, or hidden behind objects such as desks or statues.

  • In Resident Evil 1, handgun rounds are found as magazines unlike future games where they are contained in boxes.
  • In Resident Evil 2 and 3, the boxes are labeled "Tony's Arms".
  • In Resident Evil Code: Veronica, the boxes bear the brand name American Wolf.
  • In Resident Evil 4, the box reads "Red Hawk". The 9x19mm rounds are also used by the TMP although possibly for gameplay reasons the TMP uses a different box of ammunition branded as "Jackal", which is found in distinct blue and white boxes.

[edit] Trivia

  • The name Parabellum is derived from the Latin: Si vis pacem, para bellum ("If you seek peace, prepare for war"), which was the motto and telegraphic address of DWM.
  • The 9mm Luger is often compared and contrasted to the .45 ACP, a larger, heavier pistol round.
  • The 9mm is featured in all games of the Resident Evil series.
