The Heckler & Koch USP ("Universal Self-loading Pistol") is a semi-automatic pistol designed by the German arms manufacturer Heckler & Koch.
When Heckler & Koch introduced the USP in 1993, and was originally built around the .40 S&W cartridge, but a 9x19mm Parabellum was introduced at the same time. In May 1995, Heckler & Koch introduced a .45 ACP variant. The USP Compact series was introduced in 1996 and is available in 9x19mm Parabellum, .40 S&W, .45 ACP, and .357 SIG. Other variants of the standard USP include the USP Tactical, USP Expert, USP Match, USP Elite and the U.S. Special Forces' Mark 23 Mod. 0.
The USP is also used by the German Military under the designation of P8. This version is virtually identical to the standard USP, with the exception of a reversed safety catch and the use of traditional rifling in place of the USP's standard polygonal rifling.
