The M203 is a 40mm single shot Grenade Launcher that is popular among both the U.S. Military as well as law enforcement, due to its versatility, simplicity, and ability to fire virtually any lethal or non-lethal round, so long as it has a 40mm diameter. The M203 is capable of being used as an individual weapon via a stand-alone platform (usually adding little more to the launcher other than a pistol grip and skeleton stock), but it is most often seen as an accessory for an Assault Rifle, most commonly the M16 and M4. In such a design, the M203 is mounted directly to the barrel of the weapon and either covers or replaces the lower half of the handguard.
The M203 is seen sporadically throughout Resident Evil, making a brief cameo in the Outbreak series, The short film Biohazard 4D Executer, and most noticeably in the hands of the Marines and Leon S. Kennedy in Degeneration.
