Plant 43, unofficially named "Ivy", is the result of Umbrellas experiments to create a more sophisticated version of the Plant 42, which it was based on. They are bipedal green plants with arm-like vines and a large orange flower for a 'head'. Their main method of attack is to whip their target with their vines. They can also attack at range by spitting acid. If "prey" get too close, the plant will grab them with their vines and spit acid over their bodies. In some cases, the monster may appear to be dead, but will still whip people who walk too closely.
Should someone choose to release the experimental anti-BOW "P-Epsilon", the Plant will react by mutating into a stronger form. "Poison Ivies" have slightly different colouration than their counterparts and are physically tougher. The most notable difference is that the acid they spit is now poisonous.
They were created by copying DNA taken from Plant 42. This makes the "43" a "given name" rather than its parents "...At sector 42".
Ivies are very slow to move, and can be fought at range with a handgun in most of the games they appear in. In a close range fight however, they are weak against fire and will die quickly when attacked with a Flamethrower or Flame Rounds from a Grenade Launcher.
Despite the fact that they were an experimental B.O.W, Ivies are a frequently encountered B.O.W in the "Umbrella's Legacy" chapters of Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles, alongside the also-discontinued Eliminator. In this game, they display a unique weak spot; shooting an Ivy in the center of its opened flower will kill it instantly. It's actually possible to kill an Ivy with two pistol shots; the first will cause it to rear back, and then open its flower-head for a moment, and a second into the weak spot will kill it immediately.
A tropical variant of the Ivy appears in the late "Operation: Javier" chapters of Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles. Called the Ivy XY, it has a slightly more human lower body and, perhaps consequently, is somewhat faster moving, as well as a head that more closely resembles a tropical flower or a venus flytrap, with three long, narrow 'jaws' that flare out wider at the tip. The Ivy XY is somewhat stronger and tougher then its original counterpart, and lacks the aforementioned 'weak spot'.
