Regenerators are rare yet very tough enemies found in the few final chapters of the Resident Evil 4. They are capable of rapid regeneration and can take extreme amounts of damage before dying (both arms and legs blown off, decapitation, ect). The trick to killing them is removing the two to five leech-like Plagas parasites sitting on its body, which only can be seen using thermal imaging. They are very dangerous.

[edit] Characteristics
A Regenerator is a monster created by inhumane experiments with Las Plagas and human test subjects plus DNA testing. Regenerators are named for their artificially created high metabolism. If a Regenerator is injured, small tentacles sprout from the wound and appear to 'knit' new flesh, recreating entire limbs within seconds. This allows the Regenerator to recover from bullet wounds, lost limbs, decapitation, loss of lower body or even loss of the entire upper torso with little loss of overall health. The Regenerator appears as a large vaguely man-shaped creature covered in hairless, seemingly rough grey skin. Their mouths are obscenely large, taking up most of their otherwise featureless faces and are filled with needle-like teeth which force the Regenerator into a grin. Although slow to walk with a distinctly unnerving palsied gait, Regenerators are capable of frightening bursts of speed when attacking, viciously slashing and biting, and stretching their arms to unnatural lengths to grab their prey.A Regenerator may randomly run at the player and knock Leon down with it's powerful arms, which is incredibly frightening to the player as it will happen randomly and quickly, it is also worth noting that the accompanying theme song and heavy breathing for the Regenerators adds to their frightning presence. The Regenerators are inhumanly flexible as they can be knocked back into impossible positions that would snap the spine of any human, bringing themselves up with ease, suggesting the absence of a conventional skeletal system. They can also stretch limbs to extreme length in order to grab their prey and when their legs are blown away they can move forward very quickly by slamming themselves toward the ground causing them to jump forward. This is all possible due to their bodies almost completely, if not entirely, consisting of pure muscle manipulated by the leech-like Plagas hiding in its body. The presence of a Regenerator nearby can be instantly detected by the sound of their erratic and strained breathing.
[edit] Tactics
Each Regenerator carries inside it two to five leech-shaped Plagas, which are responsible for the Regenerators' rapid regeneration system and serve as its main weaknesses. They cannot be seen with the naked eye, but have to be detected with thermal imaging. When all the Plagas are killed, the Regenerator's cells spin out of control and expand, exploding the entire upper body (if the legs have been removed, the creature will explode, comically leaving behind only its pelvis). The number of leech-Plagas depend on the game's difficulty level; Regenerators on Professional usually have all five Plagas, with the final Plaga being located on the back of the Regenerator and thus preventing it from being detected with frontal thermal imaging. Killing this final Plaga requires either lucky shooting or careful aiming if the player knows the exact location of the Plaga, shooting it from the front. Another strategy is to shoot the Regenerator's leg off, causing it to fall onto the ground belly-down allowing the player to shoot the back Plaga easily. This should be exercised with EXTREME caution, however, as if the player is too close to the Regenerator after it falls, it will leap into the air, viciously bite Leon's neck, proceed to tear it apart, and finally (if not shaken off) kill Leon in a spectacularly gruesome death. On Professional mode, the Regenerator is nearly impossible to shake off if not at a full 10 bars of health, and if the player is in the yellow or red health area, death is unavoidable. The leech-like Plagas can only be killed using penetrating weapons such as the rifles, magnums and possibly the Punisher although it is difficult and not recommended. The best weapons to use are definitely the Handcannon, making the Regenerator's torso pop in one shot, and the P.R.L. 412, which destroys the Regenerator in similar fashion. The Chicago Typewriter also works very well as you can spray the whole body indefinitely until finding the Plagas while the weapons stopping power prevents the Regenerator from advancing forward. If you don't have one of these impressive weapons, another technique is to use a shotgun, magnum, or other high power weapon to destroy one of the Regenerator's legs. If you aren't bitten by the Regenerator as it leaps through the air, you can stab it into submission with your knife while it's still on the ground. However, the Regenerator can sometimes regenerate its leg while you're stabbing it. If this happens, pull out your shotgun and do it again. It takes about two minutes to kill a downed Regenerator using only the knife. When it comes to the worst, 3 incendiary grenades (on Normal) will do the job.
[edit] Role in Resident Evil 4
Regenerators are among the rarest enemies in Resident Evil 4, although more frequently encountered than their Iron Maiden relatives.
The first one is encountered in Chapter 5-1. When Leon collects a keycard from a dead body, a Regenerator awakes in a nearby locked autopsy room. The Regenerator breaks down the door and attacks Leon, two more are met outside of the room; one around the second corner of the corridor, and one through the iron gates down a very tight corridor, at the very end to the right, past the second, if Leon kills the first in the corridor, it makes the second easier to deal with. the fourth is located in the room where the freezer key is converted into the waste disposal key. This one only attacks if Leon unfreezes the room using the control panel and picks up the infra-red scope or enters the room with a infra-red scope carried over from a previous game. With this Regenerator, the door locks, forcing you to battle with it until it is dead, upon which the door unlocks and you leave with your best defense and offense against both Iron Maidens and Regenerators.
Regenerators have a different number of Las Plagas on them with each difficulty setting ranging from 2-5.
[edit] Attacks
The Regenerators have few attacks, but the ones it does have are very health-consuming.
- The Regenerator will come up close and smash Leon with an overhead swing of its arms, like a zombie. This does about 4-5 bars damage in Professional Mode and knocks Leon to the ground.
-or-
- From medium range or from the floor with a leg missing, it will extend its arms (or bounce on it's stomach when legless) and grab Leon. It will then bite Leon in the neck and latch on to him causing a quick-time event to throw the Regenerator off. If you don't shake it off it will bite through Leon's jugular. This attack causes anywhere between 4 bars of damage to death (even with maximum health)in Professional Mode depending on how quickly you are able to throw the Regenerator off.
