[edit] Early History
Rodrigo was born a native of Rockfort Island, with relatives (possibly parents) named Robert and Maria. This lasted until the Umbrella Corporation purchased the land and forced all the villagers, including Rodrigo, off the the island.
[edit] Capturing Claire Redfield
In an ironic twist, Rodrigo joined Umbrella's private security force; the Umbrella Biohazard Countermeasure Service, and soon rose to command his own elite commando unit.
While station in Paris, France, to protect Umbrella Europes' Paris Lab, Rodrigo and the rest of the guards were involved in the ambush of the Umbrella-wanted fugitive Claire Redfield, who had come seeking her brother and fellow fugitive Chris. Claire brought destruction on the base, and was able to kill many workers, but it was Rodrigo who personally captured Claire, with Rodrigo sneaking up on her and the two of them holding weapons at each other's heads.
For capturing such a wanted fugitive alive, Rodrigo gained many rewards and significant prestige. Rodrigo and his unit were tasked to transfer Claire to prison on Rockfort, which was now a military training base/illegal prison camp.
[edit] Change of Heart
Initially Rodrigo felt nothing for his actions, only caring about his career and his men, relishing in the opportunity to take on the prestigious assignment of taking his commando team to Rockfort and fighting B.O.W.s for useful combat experience.
This changed 8 hours later, when an Agency Special Forces Team attacked Rockfort, their precision artillery strikes impacting on the island's hot zone laboratory and unleashing 6 different variations of the t-virus, Umbrella's most deadly bioweapon, upon the island, the outbreak turning many of the survivors into Zombies and many B.O.W's were freed.
With Base Commander Alfred Ashford not doing anything to stop it, Rodrigo and the other ranking soldiers took charge and lead a defense against the zombies. Soon, however, all the soldiers, including Rodrigo's unit, were wiped out, and the island overrun.
Rodrigo remained in hiding from the undead, having lost his weapon some time before, and took serious internal injuries along the way. Rodrigo quickly began regretting all he had done in recent days, and even with death and destruction all around him, Rodrigo resolved to find and free Claire from the prison's isolation cell.
[edit] Death
Rodrigo made it to the prison, and released Claire from her cell, insisting she leave and he would be alright. This proved incorrect, as Rodrigo's injuries were incredibly serious, and soon blood loss and internal damage took their toll, and Rodrigo became increasingly weaker. Despite this, Rodrigo remained strong, gaining a pistol from a zombie guard who had fallen down the stairs and crawled into the cell room, killed by Rodrigo with a boot to the head. Claire returned some time later, providing medicine to relieve his pain, in exchange for advice on locating puzzle pieces to escape the island. Claire also left her lighter with Rodrigo for luck.
Rodrigo survived the self-destruct going off and destroying most of the facilities on the island. Rodrigo saw Claire and Steve Burnside escaping in a Jet.
Rodrigo remained injured in the island's underground catacombs, near the graves of his relatives, until Chris Redfield came in search of his sister and met him. Upon telling him of what became of her, the two men where suddenly attacked by a Gulp Worm, a giant t-virus-infested worm, who promptly swallowed Rodrigo whole. Chris killed the worm, who promptly spat Rodrigo out as it died, and Chris attempted to save him, but the acid burns inflicted by exposure to the chemicals in the creature's stomach proved fatal. Before dying, Rodrigo gave Claire's lighter back to Chris.
[edit] Personality
Rodrigo was a good person at heart, and a man of conscience. When Rockfort experienced a t-virus outbreak, Rodrigo was greatly shocked at the appearence of monsters, especially when they turned his squad into spaghetti. In hiding, Rodrigo believed all that had befallen him and Umbrella is how it should be and was what they deserved. Refusing to have Claire's blood on his hands, as if Claire died on Rockfort it would be his fault due to him being responsible for her capture, and he also began believing in Claire's cause to bring Umbrella to justice. Rodrigo also regretted turning a blind eye and ignoring his conscience while in service to Umbrella, all for his own greed and not caring how it affected himself. Faced with this, Rodrigo did not shift blame on anyone else except himself. Rodrigo was also deeply religious, refusing to turn to suicide while suffering serious pain from his injuries due to it being a particularly awful sin, but feared he was going to hell all the same. This changed when Claire returned to help with his injuries, in gratitude for freeing her, and Rodrigo believed he wasn't going to hell after all. In his final moments, Rodrigo believed Claire to be an angel (addressing her as such towards Chris) sent to comfort him in preparation for going to heaven.
[edit] Trivia
- In early production, the Battle Game mini-game was initially a small side story where the player would have control over Rodrigo in the village where he grew up.
