At first, the Handcannon acts like a regular magnum revolver, though its Ultimate Mighty Z ammunition is scarce. Ammo drops
Added by Play2oftenThe Handcannon is unlocked by completing "The Mercenaries" mini-game and getting 5 stars on all 4 stages with all 5 characters. From there, the Handcannon may be purchased from the Merchant for 0 pesetas (in a cleared game). It will take 790,000 pesetas to fully upgrade the Handcannon, which is cheaper than purchasing the Chicago Typewriter or Infinite Rocket Launcher, although the effort put into it is similar.
In The Umbrella Chronicles
Edit
In The Umbrella Chronicles, the Handcannon is the last and most powerful magnum available. It can be found in "The Fourth Survivor" mission in Raccoon's Destruction by blasting a door down (If you are facing the maiden statue in the lobby of the RPD, the handcannon is behind the double doors on your left). Fully upgraded it is the second strongest weapon in The Umbrella Chronicles, only behind the fully upgraded RPG-7.
Resident Evil 5
Edit
The S&W Model 500 returns in RE5, only it uses its real name. It has a base firepower of 2,100, a reload speed of 3.53, a capacity of 5, and a piercing value of 2. When it is fully upgraded, it has a firepower of 5,000, a reload speed of 3.18, a capacity of 6, and a piercing value of 3. Besides the Rocket Launcher, it is the strongest weapon in the game. It's arguably different in appearance to both the RE 4 variant, and its real life counterpart, since it's modeled after the S&W PC (Performance Center) M500 Hunter variant, noted by the heavier vented barrel.
The Handcannon can only be purchased for 30,000 Gold after fully upgrading the Smith & Wesson Model 29, but completing the game is not required. The S&W 500 is suitable for more advanced players for the powerful recoil can take a while for getting used to. However if a player can master the recoil, they can easily dispatch enemies with one hit. Note that this weapon ia a single action revolver, so it is not ideal for taking out multiple enemies at very close range. If and when the player has upgraded the weapon fully, it can take off a Majini's head even if it has a helmet. It is also good at dispatching Duvalia if they have metal leg guards, as it can go straight through their legs and drop them to their knees, ready for the killing shot. Due to its massive damage, the S&W Model 500 is a valuable weapon against mini-bosses (Chainsaw Majini, Gatling Gun Majini, Executioner Majini, etc etc) Since the player must fully upgrade the Model 29, the Handcannon will be a weaker gun after its purchase. A solid strategy is to continue using the Model 29, while leaving the Model 500 in the inventory until the Model 500 is upgraded to the point that it has a superior firepower.
The magnum rounds which are picked up throughout the game are inconsistent with this weapon, as it fires the .500 S&W Magnum round, whilst the ingame magnum rounds consist of the .44 S&W round used in the Desert Eagle and the M29.
The Mercenaries 3D
Edit
The weapon's unlimited ammo and over-exaggerated firepower is gone, as there is no way to upgrade weapons in the game but it is still one of the most powerful guns available (there is evidence to believe that its firepower is exceeded only by the Rocket-Launcher). The magnum can kill a Garrador in one shot if used on the weak spot, and three to five rounds to take down a Gatling Gun Majini at mid/close range. It is carried by Barry Burton.
Trivia
Edit
- In RE4, the Handcannon is worth 0 pesetas, though it takes 790,000 pesetas to upgrade the gun fully. It can be sold for 1,000,000 pesetas, but through means of a cheat device. (Action Replay, Codebreaker)
- It's interesting to note that in RE4, the Handcannon does not actually fire one massively powerful bullet; rather, it shoots a burst of five individual bullets bunched extremely tightly, which can act like a mini-Shotgun. You can actually see this by shooting water. Each of these shots inflicts 19.98 points of damage once the Handcannon is fully upgraded.
- When equipped in RE4's menu, Leon changes his usual Magnum-holding stance to one where his back faces the player and he perches the gun on his left shoulder, similar to how Dan Smith from Killer 7 carries his revolver.
- When fully upgraded, it is the only weapon in the game powerful enough to pierce zealot and militia helmets.
- In RE4, the Handcannon's reload animation has Leon loading individual rounds. When it is fully upgraded, however, Leon simply loads the cylinder with a speedloader. The reload can be done even after infinite ammunition is unlocked, like the Chicago Typewriter.
- The Model 500 was also used as a basis for a weapon in another Capcom game, Devil May Cry 4, where the character Nero wields a double-barreled Model 500 called the Blue Rose.
- It is usable by Sheva in the Mercenaries Reunion in her Fairy Tale loadout.
- The name for the weapon might have come from the movie Pulp Fiction, in which John Travolta's character references another character's magnum revolver, saying "did you forget that someone was in there with a goddamn handcannon?"
- The recoil of the Handcannon seems exaggerated in the game. Although it still has a hefty recoil in real life, it is not enough for the gun to go over the shooter's head as shown in the games if the wielder is strong and has a firm and proper grip. (Leon and Chris have muscular arms and have plenty of experience in shooting magnum guns so they are likely to control the recoil better than other shooters, yet still the M500 goes over their heads when they shoot). However, it could also have meant to balance the weapon so as not to make it overpowered.
- The RE4 handcannon seems to do more damage than the RE 5 version, as in RE4 it can kill some bosses in 3 hits, unlike its RE5 counterpart.
- The S&W M500 is the most powerful production hand gun in the world, and this is well reflected in-game. There are larger handgun rounds than the .500, but no production guns have yet implemented them.
- The handcannon will kill the Garradors with one shot when upgraded at Max (dealing 60 points of damage) if they're shot in the plaga; however if a player shoots at their body, it will take up to 5 shots to kill it.
- In The Mercenaries, it is advisable not to give Jill or Rebecca the handcannon, for Barry can handle less recoil.
- The Handcannon can only be 'found' during gameplay in the Umbrella Chronicles - In all of its other appearances, it is only available after performing certain tasks either during or outside the main story mode.
