Leon will appear in an R.P.D. uniform. This is an updated version of his outfit from Resident Evil 2. The R.P.D. outfit has the same effects as the Tactical Vest (shaving 30% of all damage taken). The tactical vest itself can also be worn to stop 60% of damage. This effect is not present in the Wii and HD re-release versions.

Ashley will appear in a white and red-trimmed pop star outfit. Ada wears black combat gear. It also has the butterfly icon on her shoulder that is also present on her default dress. This is the same costume she wears during the Assignment Ada mini game. The costume changes do not display during the cutscenes in the PS2 and 2007 PC versions of the game (meaning Ada's costume change is never seen, since she only appears in cutscenes).

Special 2
"Special 2" is unlocked by completing Separate Ways. This set does not display during cutscenes in any versions of the game, except for the second cutscene watching Leon approaching a Ganado household, as well as radio transmissions. This set is not available in the GameCube version.

Leon will appear in a suit, complete with a red tie, fedora, gloves, and a white scarf. His knife is reskinned into a switchblade. This will also change the appearance of the Chicago Typewriter; it will feature a foregrip and the magazine will be changed to an ammo drum. Special animations are given to Leon when reloading the Chicago Typewriter: reloading results in Leon adjusting his hat. Reloading four times in a row results in Leon performing a trick where he throws his hat up and catches it.
Ashley will appear in a white and red-trimmed pop star outfit.

Ashley Graham appears in a complete medieval suit of armor. Only part of her face can be seen normally. When aiming a gun at her the face, protection lowers itself. The suit makes her invincible to every enemy attack and any attacks by Leon. She also cannot be picked up by enemies, as they will immediately drop her and fall over themselves. When Leon catches Ashley from a fall, the animation will be different than usual, where he will flinch from the weight.
In the Gamecube and HD versions of the game, Ada wears a clad in black combat gear during all of the cutscenes. It also has the butterfly icon on her shoulder that is also present on her default dress. This is the same costume she wears during the Assignment Ada mini game.

The Gamecube and HD versions are the only two versions of the game where all three characters (Leon; Ashley; Ada) can be seen wearing their "Special 1" costumes during every cutscene through-out the game. The only logical aspect as to why they would remove this feature from the PS2, Wii, and PC releases is because of two cutscenes, both featuring Leon. (Specific Cutscenes Below…) They must've not cared after a while and realized that people actually liked the ability to choose between the outfits that could be seen in the cutscenes, bringing them to re-add the feature in the HD version.

Specific Cutscenes
1. (Cabin Nightmare), [Chapter 2-1]
Leon awakens on the floor of a small cabin only to feel the pain of the "Las Plagas" insects taking over his body internally. Soon after, Leon looks at the bottom side of his arm, only to see that his veins are darkening and crawling up towards his head/face. Leon then awakens, realizing that he had just experienced a false awakening. (Review Below)...

[Review] - Leon's default costume is just a tight short sleeve shirt, leaving his arms visible for you to see that his veins are darkening in the cutscene. Leon's special R.P.D. costume has long sleeves, making it so that when Leon looks at the bottom side of his arm, all you can see is the sleeve of his R.P.D. outfit. Leaving the dark veins to only be seen on his face towards the end of his false awakening.

2. (Encounter with Ada), [Chapter 5-4]
Ada catches up with Leon in a small room, noticing that Leon is feeling internal pain. She then asks if Leon is okay, Leon replies with "Yeah". Short after, Leon is grunting, and you see his veins darkening again. He then slowly approaches Ada and wraps his hands around her neck, strangling her. As Leon is suffocating Ada, you can see that Leon's eyes have turned red. Ada, in agony, reaches down towards her thigh and pulls out a small switchblade, stabbing Leon in the upper part of his leg. Leon then shouts out of pain, and Ada knees him in the lower stomach area, making Leon retract. Leon, snapped back into his normal state of mind, then takes a couple of the pills that were given to him by Luis Sera, just before his death. Leon, realizing what he had just done, apologizes to Ada. Ada then states, "We have got to get that parasite out of your body." Leon replies, "Yeah, but first I've got to find Ashley." Ada agrees, says to split-up, then parts from Leon. (Review Below)...

[Review] - Again, Leon's default costume is just a tight short sleeve shirt, leaving his arms visible for you to see that his veins are darkening in the cutscene. Leon's special R.P.D. costume has long sleeves, making it so that you cannot see his veins darkening through his skin, all you can see is the sleeve of his R.P.D. outfit. It's the same issue as the last cutscene. Though, in this cutscene, the darkness in Leon's veins never reach his face. The only thing that changes on his face in this cutscene is his eyes. In the previous cutscene, Leon's eyes did not turn red.

"Special 2" Outfits
"Special 2" is not available in the Gamecube version. For all other releases, it is unlocked by completing Separate Ways.

Leon S. Kennedy will appear as a gangster outfit complete with a red tie, fedora, gloves, and a white scarf. This will also reskin his knife into a switchblade. This will also change the appearance of the Chicago Typewriter; the magazine will be changed to an ammo drum. Special animations are given to Leon when reloading the Chicago Typewriter: reloading results in Leon adjusting his hat. Reloading a four times in a row results in Leon performing a trick where he throws his hat up and catches it. The gangster outfit reduces enemy damage by 60% and when combined with the Tactical Vest, reduces 90% damage. Again the effect is not present in the Wii and HD re-release versions.

Ashley Graham appears in a complete medieval suit of armor. Only part of her face can be seen normally. When aiming a gun at her the face protection lowers itself. The suit makes her invincible to every enemy attack. She also cannot be picked up by enemies as they will immediately drop her. When Leon catches Ashley from a fall, he will flinch from the massive weight.

When playing with the "Special 2" set, these costumes will not be visible during in-game cutscenes; instead the cutscenes show Leon, Ashley, and Ada all wearing their default costumes, for the same reason as Leon's "Special 1" outfit.

The following details unlockables in Resident Evil 4. This is content players do not initially have access to.

This does not include items hidden on stages nor the weapons you can get from the Merchant when he updates his shop as the player progresses through the main game.

The player can collect 24 different viewable bottle caps by playing the Shooting Range mini-game. Collecting full sets of these awards the player with money.

Title screen[]

The default title screen is a still image of Leon and Ashley. After beating the game once, the screen will change to a scrolling panoramic image of the village centre. The joystick can be pushed to change the scroll speed and direction of the image. After beating the game, there is no way to change the image back to the default one.

New round[]

Players can restart the game after a completion with all their current equipment. The Merchant will also always have his full list of items and tune ups on sale as well as any extra weapons the player has unlocked.

Professional mode[]

Unlocked by beating the game once on normal mode, players now have the option of starting a new game (not a new round) on this difficulty setting. This serves as the game's hardest mode. Enemies take and deal more damage and most ganados do not hesitate to attack.

Weapons[]

Extra weapons are only usable in completed game files.

Weapon Requirement
Matilda Beat the main game once.
Infinite Launcher Beat the main game once.
Handcannon Obtain a 5 star rank with all characters on all stages in the Mercenaries minigame.
Chicago Typewriter Clearing the Assignment Ada mini-game unlocks this for the maingame in the Gamecube version, but unlocks it for Separate Ways in all other versions. Beating Separate Ways will then unlock it for the main game.
P.R.L. 412 Beat Professional mode. This weapon is not in the GameCube version.

Costumes[]

There are two sets of unlockable costumes. Players are given the option to select them when starting a new game or round. When selected, all costumes change based on the set, there is no option to change each character's costume individually or during mid game. If the player has kept the tactical vest and chooses the "Default" costume set, Leon will have the vest on and not his jacket.

Special 1[]

Set "Special 1" is unlocked by completing the game.

Leon will appear in an R.P.D. uniform. This is an updated version of his outfit from Resident Evil 2.

Special 2[]

Leon and Ashley Extra Costumes

Leon and Ashley wearing their "Special 2" costumes.

Game modes[]

All extra game modes are unlocked by completing the game once. They are;

The Mercenaries - An arcade style minigame where the player can play as different characters to kill enemies within a time limit and aim for a high score.

Assignment: Ada - A short non-canon scenario where the player controls Ada and must collect plaga samples. She has her own starting equipment and it takes place on the beginning parts of the island.

Separate Ways - A large 5-chapter semi-canon scenario that shows Ada's actions during the main game. The player can save during the game and visit the Merchant. It isn't present in the GameCube version.

In the German release of the game, The Mercenaries and Assignment Ada are unavailable due to censoring, and are only available in the 2016 PC version of the game's German release.

Movie browser[]

An option that allowed players to rewatch cutscenes. All the main game scenes are added once the game is complete, and all the Separate Ways scenes are added once that game mode is completed. This is not available in the GameCube version.

Ada's Report[]

Ada's Report is a short series of video reports by Ada. There are five, and each one is unlocked by completing a chapter of Separate Ways.
