A virus is a sub-microscopic particle that can infect a host cell. Viruses are incapable of replicating without infecting a cell. At their most basic, they are genetic material contained within a protective protein.

The Progenitor virus (also called Mother or Founder virus) was discovered by Ozwell E. Spencer, Edward Ashford, and James Marcus in the 1950s, while they searched for a powerful flowering plant able to change the genetic structure of those who ate from it.
After years of studying for use as a Bio-logical weapon, Marcus almost completely gave up over its failures. Eventually however, he created a new virus from the DNA of a Leech infected with Progenitor. He called this virus "tyrant".

The tyrant virus became Umbrella's priority experimental virus for several decades after its creation. It had the ability to mutate almost anything it came in contact with. Its downside however, was that only a small percentage of Humans could successfully "bond" and co-exist with the virus. Those who did bond became the ultimate B.O.W.s, "Tyrant", named after the virus itself.
The rest of the Human population would go through a degeneration into Zombie-like creatures, before being able to progress into the "Licker".

The Gene virus was disocvered in the body of Lisa Trevor after decades of use as a test subject for Umbrella's viruses and parasitic organisms. The virus was heavily modified by William Birkin and his wife Annette, finishing the virus on September 22nd, mere minutes or even seconds before the formers assasination at the hands of Umbrella themselves.
The virus proved to be both an amazing success and a horrific failure as Birkin became infected with the virus. Searching for Humans to be hosts for his seeds, he began to degenerate along the way before becoming nothing more than a mass of flesh. He was eventually killed by an auto-destruct. The virus however, allowed William to continue through those eight days by regenerating his body; strengthening the damaged parts and removing unneeded organs.
A sample of the virus was successfully taken by a USS agent code-named "HUNK," who delivered the virus to Umbrella. After Umbrella's destruction, recreated samples would end up in the Bioterror black market.

The T-Veronica virus was created by Alexia Ashford in Antarctica. It was a combination of Progenitor virus; an ancient virus found within an Ant Queen, and the DNA of Veronica Ashford. Her genes were used by her decendant Alexander to create a designer baby created to be a genious.
The virus needs as many as 15 years to co-exist with the host and thus when Alexia infected herself, went into Cryogenic suspension for so long, after testing on Alexander failed due to a lack of time to co-exist.
The virus mutated her into an Insect-like creature with blood that could catch fire when reacting with Oxygen. After growing wings, Chris Redfield exterminated her with an anti-B.O.W. weapon.
[edit] Tyrant/Gene
The tG-virus was created by successfully merging the tyrant virus with the Gene virus. This could allow an infected host to mutate uncontrollably and generate electrical attacks. The only known host, Morpheus D. Duvall, was also one of the few able to bond with the t-virus. This meant that after injecting himself, he mutated into a Tyrant before degenerating from injuries.
