In the beginning, the Yawn was one of many test subjects bred specifically to become experimental B.O.W., as opposed to other native snakes in the Arklay region. The specimen escaped however, and managed to avoid recapture by the scientists in the Arklay Research Facility. It was eventually infected with the T-virus following the leak in May 1998, and it promptly made the Arklay Mansion its home, preying on any humans that it happened to come across.
From the accomplished research, the specimen proved that Snake-based B.O.W.s were unfit for production. The specimen earned the nickname "Yawn" as it gave the appearance of yawning as it opened its mouth to attack its prey. The most noticeable aspect of its t-Virus infection is its enormous size, large enough to swallow a human being whole. It also proved to retain its predator intellect, easily able to stalk and attack its prey before they even realized it. However, the Yawn exhibited examples of uncoordinated mutations; its size became greatly inconsistent with its length, and its body was covered with various sores and tumours. The potency of its venom was also significantly enhanced, requiring a specially-formulated serum to counteract it. Its venom could quickly immobilize a human being in minutes, and would kill shortly afterwards if left untreated.
The Yawn encountered S.T.A.R.S. Bravo team members Richard Aiken and Rebecca Chambers as they explored the mansion, chasing them through individual rooms until it cornered them. After Richard managed to save Rebecca from harm, the Yawn attacked and poisoned Richard before escaping back into the Mansion's framework. Left poisoned and dying, Richard and Rebecca hid until discovered by S.T.A.R.S. Alpha team members Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine (see: Canon in Resident Evil).
The Yawn is later fought in the attic of the estate, but escapes before it can be killed. If the player has chosen Jill Valentine and has saved Richard's life, the Yawn attacks and crushes Richard before escaping. (It is unknown if this is the canonical scenario, as Richard is instead killed by the Neptune in Chris's scenario.)
The Yawn later attacks the player again in the Mansion library, where it is killed in its attempt to devour the player.
In the Nintendo DS version of Resident Evil, the Yawn survives its battle in the Library, returning in Point 42 formally occupied by Plant 42, where its epidermis has developed hardened scales.
In the original version, the Yawn will devour the character if he/she is at low health. Alternatively in the remake, the Yawn will wrap around and crush the character in its coils.
