Ad-lib1

Alyssa ad-libs about the situation.

The Ad-lib system is a feature used predominately in Resident Evil Outbreak and Outbreak File #2. In the former game this uses the Square Button, while in the latter the Triangle Button is used. How ad-libs are used depends on the region.

Overview[]

During gameplay, Ad-libs take the form of coloured subtitles which can be distinguished from the white examine text - green for male characters, and yellow for female characters. Though the ad-lib text themselves are unique to each character and situation, they are represented by stock soundbites rather than uniquely recorded dialogue. The ad-lib system allows the characters to reveal more about their backstories; for instance, at the start of "Decisions, Decisions" George's ad-libs will detail his relationship with Peter Jenkins.

Ad-lib types[]

Ad-libs can be used in a variety of ways in-game depending on the situation. If simply exploring, the player can use the ad-lib feature to talk about the actual story itself. If reading a file, there are unique ad-libs for their reaction to the green text; similarly, when looking around the level's map the player can often talk about each room. Finally, the player can also communicate with NPCs and AIPCs, pressing the button repeatedly to cycle through a whole conversation.

Region-exclusivity[]

Like other things, the ad-lib tool behaves differently for the Japanese, American and European versions of the games. In the European version of File #2, for example while the player will be provided with a stock phrase, there is no accompanying subtitles for when trying to hold conversation with NPCs and AIPCs, or for casually discussing their experiences in the level. The only time ad-libs are, therefore, useful is when examining the map or the green text on files.
