The Anti-Umbrella Pursuit and Investigation Team ( (たい)アンブレラ追撃 (ついげき)調査 (ちょうさ)チーム tai anburera tsuigeki chōsa chīmu?)[1] was a classified American military special operations unit within USSTRATCOM (United States Strategic Command). It was formed to take on the rising threat of bio-weapons which the US Army at the time had no countermeasures for, as well as take down Umbrella. It was eventually disbanded with the founding of the DSO in 2011. Among its operators were Bruce McGivern and Leon S. Kennedy.

History[]

Foundations[]

The 1998 Raccoon City Destruction Incident exposed serious failings within the US Army in handling the threat of Progenitor-derived bioweaponry, with severe casualties being suffered by both the regular infantry sent in to rescue civilians and special operations units such as Delta Force who were sent in to recover high-priority assets. Following the hasty resignation of the President, the Pentagon began training a new special ops unit to tackle the threat posed by both B.O.W.s and their developers. Officially under the United States Strategic Command, then known more for its intelligence and missile strike and defence capabilities, but reporting directly and solely to the President. This unit's operations were classified to maintain the new President's decision to deny the existence of B.O.W.s, something carried over for several years into the subsequent Graham Administration.

Operation history[]

In 2002, USSTRATCOM worked with a branch of USSOCOM in an investigation of South American drug lord Javier Hidalgo, who was linked to black market bio-weapons dealings. Hidalgo was eliminated, and it was confirmed the bio-weapons dealer had already been killed. In September 2002 USSTRATCOM was sent out to the Atlantic Ocean to infiltrate the Spencer Rain, an Umbrella-owned cruise ship which had been stolen by bioterrorist Morpheus D. Duvall. The agent, Bruce McGivern, followed Duvall to a missile silo in which t-Virus warheads were installed. The silo and its missiles were successfully destroyed.

Fate[]

The taskforce was ultimately disbanded in 2011 and responsibilities taken over by the Division of Security Operations.[2] Its prior existence was unknown to the public but would later be theorized by sociologist Joey Belladonna.[3]

Function[]

The unit was organized in USSTRATCOM under the direct control of the U.S. president. While its principal directive was Anti-Virus Weapon Protocol No. 7600, the agency handles any duties mandated by the President, with agent Kennedy also given a supplemental assignment of protecting the immediate family of President-elect Graham, a duty shared with the Secret Service, following the fall of Umbrella.

Further notes[]

  • The organization's name was confirmed in Resident Evil: Dead Aim, which was written by Noboru Sugimura to tie-in to Resident Evil 4, which was then going through its "Castle" phase of development, and was also to feature this unit. The unit's settings were unchanged in the final game, but as writing was taken over by Shinji Mikami, it's only explicitly mentioned in the game's guidebook as a "secret military agency."
  • The organization was conceived by Yasuhisa Kawamura for the Resident Evil 3: Nemesis epilogues, and would be adapted by Hiroki Kato (as an "underground anti-Umbrella organization") for Wesker's Report I.
  • In a scrapped GameBoy Advance title, Jill Valentine was also going to be forcefully recruited into this agency.
  • In Resident Evil 4, the unit is only referred to in the game's English script as a "secret organization." In officially localized material such as BIOHAZARD archives II, the unit's colloquial name of "secret military agency" was translated as "U.S. Secret Service." This, alongside the reference to Leon acting as a bodyguard to Ashley Graham, caused a misunderstanding that Leon had become a member of the Secret Service.
