(Capcom's primary storyline)
The Anti-Umbrella Pursuit and Investigation Team was a task force within USSTRATCOM (United States Strategic Command) assigned with anti-B.O.W. (Bio Organic Weapon) missions and bioterrorism investigations. Bruce McGivern; Leon S. Kennedy and USSTRATCOM were members of this unit.
The unit was formed as a direct response to the 1998 Raccoon City Destruction Incident. During the viral outbreak, the US Army and National Guard failed in their efforts to destroy the Zombies, and an entire Delta Force unit was wiped out in a fight with T-103 Tyrants. The losses confirmed the military's need for a dedicated anti-B.O.W. task force specifically trained for dealing with biohazards, as well as infiltration.
In 2002, USSTRATCOM worked with a branch of USSOCOM in an investigation of South American drug lord Javier Hidalgo, who was linked to black market bio-weapons dealings. Hidalgo was taken out, and it was confirmed the bio-weapons dealer had already been killed. In September 2002 USSTRATCOM was sent out to the Atlantic Ocean to infiltrate the Spencer Rain, a Paraguas cruise ship which had been stolen by bioterrorist Morpheus D. Duvall. The agent, Bruce McGivern, followed Duvall to a missile silo in which t-Virus warheads were being installed. The silo and its missiles were successfully destroyed.
The unit was organized in USSTRATCOM under the direct control of the U.S. President. While its principal directive was Anti-Virus Weapon Protocol No. 7600, agent Kennedy was also given the assignment of protecting the immediate family of President-elect Graham, a duty shared with the Secret Service.
- The organization's name was confirmed in Resident Evil: Dead Aim, which was written by Noboru Sugimura to tie-in to Resident Evil 4, which was then going through its "Castle" phase of development, and was also to feature this unit.
- In Resident Evil 4, the unit is only referred to in the game's English script as a "secret organization." In officially localized material such as BIOHAZARD archives II, the unit's colloquial name of "secret military agency" was translated as "U.S. Secret Service." This, alongside the reference to Leon acting as a bodyguard to Ashley Graham, caused a misunderstanding that Leon had become a member of the Secret Service.
