"We're assets, Nicholai. Expendable assets... and we've just been expended."
— To Nicholai.

Carlos Olivera was an Umbrella Biohazard Countermeasure Service operative who served under the Umbrella Corporation until the Raccoon City incident, after which he joined an anti-Umbrella vigilante group. He later went on to lead a convoy of survivors in the years following the Global T-Virus pandemic.

Biography[]

Raccoon City[]

Carlos Olivera was a member of one of the Umbrella Corporation's Biohazard Countermeasure Service units during the T-Virus outbreak in Raccoon City. While returning from a mission in the city via helicopter during the outbreak, Olivera disobeyed orders issued by his Umbrella superiors to return to base, and instead proceeded to attempt the rescue of Marla Maples, a civilian who was being attacked by a group of Undead on the rooftop of an office building. Olivera had the pilot of his aircraft hover over the building while he roped down, shooting and eliminating several undead while descending with his sidearm. However, Maples had already been bitten on her arm before he could reach her and thus infected with the virus. Knowing that she would inevitably die and become one of the undead, she instead chose to commit suicide by jumping off the building before she could turn.[1]

As the outbreak continued to spread, Olivera and his partners, Nicholai Ginovaef and Yuri Loginova, received orders to assist the Special Tactics And Rescue Squad and the Raccoon City Police officers at one of the extraction points located in the heart of Raccoon City. During this operation Yuri was bitten and infected, leading him to then bite and infect Olivera. The injured Olivera proceeded to shoot Yuri in the head, ending the threat he posed.[1]

When it became clear that Umbrella was not going to extract him and the remaining member of his team, and that they would be left to die, Nicholai and Olivera both chose to go rogue, abandoning their mission and instead opting to search for their own way out of the city. It was after going rogue that the pair was contacted by Dr. Charles Ashford, a senior researcher within Umbrella, who offered to help the pair escape the city if they rescued his daughter, Angela Ashford. Angela had become trapped in the Raccoon City Junior School during the outbreak. Olivera met Lloyd Jefferson Wayne inside the school after saving him from an undead who had caught him off-guard. They both teamed up, and eventually met up with Alice and Jill Valentine.[1]

Unfamiliar with each other, Alice and Olivera were prepared to fire on one another before L.J intervened and vouched for Olivera, noting he was on their side. As Olivera's infection worsened however, Alice, now aware that he had been bitten, pronounced him fortunate and while the group was on the way to City Hall, she administered the Anti-virus, countering Olivera' infection.[1]

Olivera later managed to help the group find a way out of the city before it's destruction by hijacking the last remaining Umbrella helicopter from the roof of the local City Hall. As the group was fleeing via air, a nuclear missile struck the city, destroying it and damaging their helicopter. Due to the damage sustained in the explosion, the helicopter crashed in the Arklay Mountains. Everyone except Alice survived the crash, and the survivors fled the site of the crash before Umbrella personnel arrived.[1]

Three weeks after the Raccoon City disaster Olivera and Jill, who were veing sought by police for their alleged involvement in the Raccoon City incident as a result of the story fabricated by Umbrella, both infiltrated a laboratory utilized by Umbrella to rescue Alice, who had been reanimated using the T-virus. As they departed from the facility grounds, Dr. J. Isaacs ordered the guards to let them go and activated "Project Alice", unbeknownst to the group.[1]

Global outbreak[]

In the years after the Raccoon City disaster,[2] Olivera and L.J. have joined with Claire Redfield's convoy of survivors, traveling through the Nevada Desert and the ruins of Las Vegas. Olivera, L.J., and survivors K-Mart, Mikey, Otto, Chase, and Betty fought to survive extinction against hordes of Undead, killer crows, and the most terrifying creatures created as a result of the deadly T-Virus that has killed millions.

They are later reunited with Alice, who uses her T-Virus abilities to kill the crows attacking the defenseless convoy. After she recovers from the energy spent in the attack, she reveals the journal that holds the coordinates to Arcadia, a possible safe haven for survivors. Alice and Olivera are able to reconcile when she admits that her departure was to keep the others safe from Umbrella (who were tracking her with their satellite).

Extinction - Carlos explosion pan out

Olivera moments from death.

In a battle against a horde of Super Undead, Olivera was bitten and infected by an Undead L.J., who died during a battle in the ruins of Las Vegas. Knowing that his time was up, Olivera volunteered to sacrifice himself in order to save the remaining survivors. Before his departure, he and Alice admit their feelings for each other with a kiss. After Alice promises to make Umbrella pay, he took a tanker truck rigged with dynamite and ploughed through the blockade of Undead surrounding the gated façade for the underground Umbrella facility. He is able to enjoy one last smoke before detonating the dynamite. The explosion killed him and most of the Undead, clearing the path for the convoy.

Legacy[]

Olivera was mentioned alongside Mikey and L.J. by Alice in an attempt to help amnesiac Claire recover her memories. The effort was thought to have been made in vain, however, Claire eventually regained her memories once they arrived to Arcadia, a roaming ship under the control of Albert Wesker. At some point the Umbrella Corporation created at least two cloned versions of him. One was named Todd meant to play the part of an Alice clone's husband while in the Umbrella Prime facility, while the other was a clone who was made to play the more tactical roles of his progenitor, also stationed within Umbrella Prime. After the first clone served his purpose in the testing site, the second clone was deployed supposedly under the orders of the Red Queen to kill Alice and any others attempting to help her escape from an underground Umbrella facility. Ultimately, the clone failed and Alice managed to escape.

Further notes[]

  • The role of Carlos Olivera is described in the casting sheet accordingly: "Battle-hardened with dark good looks, Olivera is the head of the Umbrella Biohazard Countermeasure Force, a corporate paramilitary unit sent into combat to defend Umbrella’s interests. Ordered into Raccoon City to help fight the Undead invasion, Carlos soon finds his unit overwhelmed and cut off. Partnered with Nicholai Sokolov, Carlos joins forces with Alice, Jill, and Peyton, and together they try to fight their way out of the city. He is tough, cunning, and resourceful, as well as quite cynical about Umbrella’s willingness to abandon their employees to an ugly death. He is introduced in the “Resident Evil 3” videogame."[3]
