Chad Kaplan[2] (d. 2002) was an Umbrella soldier and computer technician, who served as part of their Sanitation team during the Hive raid. He ultimately perished during the incident.

Biography[]

In September 2002, a T-virus outbreak at Raccoon City's Hive facility was prevented from spreading when the Red Queen supercomputer systematically killed all personnel before cutting off all communication with the outside. In response, Umbrella set out a squad under James "One" Shade to infiltrate the facility and disable the Red Queen to make room for more forensic investigations later. The squad entered the Looking Glass House and took a subway train into the Hive itself, picking up that building's security employees - Alice and Spence - as well as an anti-Umbrella activist posing as a police officer.[3]

During the initial exploration of The Hive, the facility was found to be deserted with no signs of life save for the body of a drowned researcher. With the elevators destroyed, they took the stairwell to the Queen's Chamber, splitting up as they went through Dining Hall B. In the chamber, Kaplan took control of a security terminal and attempted to hack into the computer mainframe remotely. Red Queen, however, anticipated his actions and lured Shade, Commando #1 and Warner into a corridor and killed them before Warner could finish disabling the security system. Kaplan then reluctantly passed through the same corridor to complete the shut-down procedure, where Red Queen warned him of his impending death.[3]

Intent on leaving the facility behind, Kaplan led Alice and Spence back to Dining Hall B to meet up with the others - J.D., Rain and Addison - and were almost immediately swarmed by Undead who had formerly been sealed behind electronic locks. Overcome by the situation, Kaplan lost his cool and repeatedly failed to enter a security code for a door. J.D. would himself take over the situation, only to be dragged through the door by Undead on the other side.[3]

With their escape routes cut-off, Kaplan returned to the Queen's Chamber with Rain and Spence to defend themselves from the Undead, though saw little chance of escape. When Alice and Addison arrived, they re-activated Red Queen under Kaplan's express opposition, and he rigged an EMP generator for remote activation in the event Red Queen attempted to kill them once more. Red Queen guided the six into utility tunnels beneath the Queen's Chamber to avoid the Undead, though they soon found they too had already broken into those areas. During their escape from one group, Kaplan was bitten repeatedly and infected with T-virus. Losing all hope of survival, he instead remained behind on a platform intent on killing himself. Unable to complete the deed, he relented and moved on to look for the others.

Kaplan finally tracked down the other survivors to a flooded lab room, where they were being held hostage by the Redd Queen which Alice and Addison had re-activated. Disabling the computer once more, the remaining team made their way back to the subway train back to the Looking Glass House. It was during this transit, however, the train was attacked by an escaped Licker and Kaplan was thrown out of the train to his death.

Further notes[]

  • In an early draft script for Resident Evil, Kaplan was originally named Isaib Tagawa Mercurio; he prefers his callsign, “Twelve”.[4]
    • Instead of Alice, Kaplan makes a deal with the Red Queen to secure an escape from the Hive.[4]
    • He survives the fight with the Licker on the Alexia 5000, but begins to succumb to his injuries after escaping the Hive. He becomes an Undead and attacks the Umbrella scientists led by an unnamed doctor.[4]
  • A clone of Kaplan was to appear in Resident Evil: Retribution, and appeared in drafts at least up to 21 August 2011. Possibly due to availability issues, Kaplan's clone was replaced with one of Carlos Olivera. In that draft it was also implied Kaplan himself is a clone in Resident Evil.
  • While making her way through the Hive to retrieve the anti-virus in Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, Alice rediscovers the laser corridor and remembers the deaths of One's Sanitation team there and Kaplan's role. Outside of the corridor, Alice discovers bags containing some of the team's leftover equipment including better weapons and explosives. Alice arms herself and Doc with some of their machine guns and later uses their explosives to destroy the Hive.
