Chapter 1-1 is the opening chapter to Resident Evil 5.

Plot

BSAA agents Chris Redfield and Sheva Alomar enter through the wall that separates the bio-terrorist-led Kijuju from the plaga-free side in order to investigate Ricardo Irving, a black-market bioweapons dealer known to work in Africa. Chris and Sheva meet up with their informant in a butcher's shop to collect their materiel before leaving. The informant is later killed in a pubic display, and the two agents must escape the horde.

Transcript

{Cutscene}

Scenes cut between Jill Valentine standing next to a kneeled Kijujuan and two BSAA trucks parking inside a garage. Jill begins circling the man, who grabs her hand in pain; his eyes are entirely blacked-out. The BSAA members get out of their vehicles.

Dan DeChant: "Move! Move!"

Jill pulls her arm from the man in disgust and leaves him behind as a bizarre worm-like creature falls out of his mouth. The rest of his body begins to turn into a series of worm-like creatures.

  • Dan DeChant: "Captain DeChant here. We've secured the underground route to the coordinates."

Two BSAA members close the garage door behind them. Elsewhere, Chris Redfield drives through the savannah to the city.

Chris Redfield (narrative): "I should've seen it coming. It didn't take long after the fall of the Umbrella Corporation for their bio weapons to end up in the hands of terrorists. A new era of bio-terrorism descended upon vulnerable countries, shifting the balance of power throughout the region. People in the destabilised areas feared another incident like Raccoon City was inevitable. As panic spread, governments of the world turned to the Federation of Pharmaceutical Companies, which formed the anti-terrorism unit BSAA. Operatives of the BSAA were sent to infiltrate and neutralise bioterrorist hotspots, restoring safety and stability to various regions throughout the globe.

Now inside the city, Chris gets out of his vehicle. A woman in a purple shirt walks up to Chris.

Sheva Alomar: "Welcome to Africa. My name is Sheva Alomar."

Chris Redfield: "Chris Redfield."

The two shake hands.

Sheva Alomar: "Your reputation precedes you, Mr. Redfield. It's an honour."

Chris Redfield: "Just Chris, thanks. So you'll be accompanying me to the destination?"

Sheva Alomar: "Yes. Tensions are running high ever since the change in government."

Chris Redfield: "I'll bet. Intel says it's a haven for terrorists now."

Sheva Alomar: "And they're not gonna be happy to see an American, BSAA or not. That's why I'm your partner; help put them at ease."

Chris Redfield: "I'm sure you'll do just fine... 'Partner'."

Chris has a flashback to a gravestone; it reads "Jill Valentine 1974-2006".

Sheva Alomar: "You OK?"

Chris Redfield: "Yeah, sorry... It's nothing. Let's go."

The two begin walking to their destination.

Chris Redfield (narrative): "Casualties continue to mount over the long years I've struggled. More and more I find myself wondering if it's all worth fighting for. Maybe one day I'll find out."

A Kijujuan soldier stationed at the wall stops the two, ordering for their identities in Swahili. The man begins to touch Sheva's body under the guise of looking for weapons, though her clothing clearly shows that she has nothing to hide. Sheva reacts to the attention by pushing the man away.

Sheva Alomar: "You don't have to get touchy!"

Sheva shows the man an identification card.

Sheva Alomar: "Let's go."

The two are now free to walk past the guard and through the gate.

Chris Redfield (narrative): "There is one thing I know... I have a job to do, and I'm gonna see it through."

The two pass through the gate. A man nearby looks at them in disgust.

{Gameplay}

Kirk Mathison (via radio): "This is Kirk. Chris, Sheva: Can you read me?"

Chris Redfield: "Chris, here. Coming in loud and clear, Kirk."

Sheva Alomar: "Yes, we read you."

Kirk Mathison (via radio): "There's a black market weapons deal going down in Kijuju. That's where Irving will be. Alpha Team has already infiltrated the area and you'll be going in as backup. Rendezvous with your contact at the butcher's shop. You can gear up and get briefed on the mission there. Watch your backs!"

Chris Redfield: "Roger that."

Sheva Alomar: "Copy. Over and out."

{Cutscene}

Chris and Sheva approach the Corner Pyamy as a siren is heard. Sheva turns around to the road, where a radio bellows a nationalist program to an abandoned street - the people Chris and Sheva walked past have suddenly disappeared.

Reynard Fisher: "Ah, Chris Redfield. Go around to the side door."

Sheva Alomar: "Chris, this way."

Walking into the shop

'Reynard Fisher: "Good, you're both here. Come."

{Cutscene}

Reynard Fisher: "You two. This way. It may be because of the new government, but people around here are a little on edge. You should do what you came here to do and go home."

Chris Redfield: "Yeah, they really roll out the red carpet for us Americans."

Reynard Fisher: "I have your weapons for you here. Check them."

{Gameplay}'

Reynard Fisher: "Grab your weapons. The operation's already started."

{Cutscene}'

Sheva loads her Beretta.

Sheva Alomar: "Destination coordinates?"

Reynard Fisher: "Town square's up ahead. Go through there, Alpha Team's waiting at the deal location."

Sheva Alomar: "Good."

Reynard Fisher: "What do you know about 'Uroboros'?"

Chris Redfield: "Mostly just rumours... Something about visions of a doomsday project."

Reynard Fisher: "'Doomsday' sounds about right, and apparently it is no rumour."

Sheva Alomar: "You're kidding, right?"

Reynard Fisher: "You must find a man named Irving; he's our only lead."

Raymond walks out of a door.

Reynard Fisher: "And be careful out there."

Walkthrough

Civilian Checkpoint

As you walk down the path in the village, you notice that some of its residents are participating in rather violent behaviour. Right now, they will not attack you; you will get some funny looks from them, though. You can hold down the left analogue stick to run if you want to get to your destination faster.

You continue past the group of men as they stare at you. After the cutscene, continue onward to the Butcher shop. As you enter, a man tells you to go around to the side door. In the shop, you talk to Reynard and are told to grab your weaponry. Pick up the pistol, then equip it to continue. Note that if you equipped any weapon in the equipment menu before this level starts, you can now draw your weapon out and continue without picking up the pistol (This, of course, applies to "replay" gamers only).

Back Alley

You regain control of your character at this point. There are some documents on one of the tables here. You can read them for some game control tips. Head out of the shop and head down the stairway. You will run into a flock of crows feeding on a carcass. You may inspect it and notice that it's still warm. Head off into the side building and check the area for ammo in boxes. Head to the table and you find a goat. It appears as though it's being used in some kind of ritual. In the left corner, you can check a piece of paper on the table with an odd message. Head out the back door off to the right corner while picking up an herb and some ammunition along the way. All of a sudden, a scream is heard. Rush to the building to investigate.

Watch the cutscene. Sheva is caught in surprise while Chris makes note that these guys definitely don't seem like any of the zombies he's ever seen. Neutralize the lone target and head on to the next room. Jump out the window and make your way around the path. You will trigger an onslaught of Majini. Follow Sheva's advice and head into the house. Scavenge what items you can find and inspect the door to find out you can kick it down. In this next room, jump down the hole into a tunnel. Follow the linear underground path, climb upstairs, and exit the little shack. Follow the narrow path to the gate, to enter the next area. You don't actually have to flee, but staying is inadvisable in a first playthrough. However, if you are capable of defeating thirty enemies, a dynamite wielding Majini will appear. Defeating him will result in you earning a treasure worth 3,000 (Marquise Topaz).

Public Assembly

Executioner

Make your way down the path, and prepare yourself before heading into the house, as doing so will trigger a cutscene. After the scene, begin by pushing the shelves in front of the windows and door to buy some time. Find all the items you can in the house (destroy the fruit and open the drawer). Now be prepared to hold your ground, defeat any Majini making their way into the house. If you survive long enough, a scene will be triggered where Majini will break in through the roof. This is your cue to run out the door or jump out the window. Deal with any Majini in your way and wait for The Executioner to knock down the fence. Once the fence is down, run all the way to the giant gate. Turn right to reveal a suitcase holding a Skorpion Vz.61 Machine Gun. You can now enter all the houses and salvage what items you can find, but be quick about it (one house contains hand grenades, while the other contains ammunition). Keep moving to stay ahead of the mob. Attempt to make your way to higher ground. Use the stairs, then jump to the roofs of the adjacent buildings, as the Executioner can't reach those areas. You can also hide inside of the bus located near the oil barrels. Your main goal is to survive until Kirk arrives, so try to play it safe if you can. If you are attempting to kill the Executioner, then use the red oil drums to your advantage. They are located all throughout the map. You can also use the stacked barrels to set the immediate area alight as well as grenades and the electricity boxes. Killing the Executioner will result in you earning a treasure called Gold Ring which is worth 5,000. You can also push the ladder down to slow down your foes. If you survive long enough, then Kirk will eventually radio you, telling you to seek cover. After watching the cutscene, the first chapter of Resident Evil 5 ends.

During the gauntlet section, there are two electrical transformers, one to the left of the first metal gate, and one straight down the path to the second gate. Shooting them down triggers an electric shock in a large area, damaging and stunning enemies. After being knocked down, the electric boxes can be shot again to produce electric shocks, causing high damage and stunning large groups of enemies. An easy way to deal with the Executioner Majini is to lure him to a transformer, electrocute him, and run up to uppercut him backwards. After running back into position the transformer should be recharged and ready to stun the Executioner again.

It should be noted that all the items save for three grenades atop the highest position in the assembly will disappear after this chapter is complete. It is unlikely that you will be able to gather all the items and defeat the Executioner without a co-op partner.
