The Republic of Edonia (often referred to as the Edonia Republic or simply Edonia) is a small eastern European country located in the Balkan Peninsula.

Torn apart by decades of political turmoil, economic instability and civil war, the country became ground zero for the 2012-13 Global bioterror attacks.

History[]

The Republic of Edonia was previously part of the Eastern bloc of the Soviet Union and was one of the first countries to secede from the union following the Autumn of Nations. However, internal affairs between the countries proved instable and conflict escalated after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, inevitably leading to economic turmoil (widespread inflation and food shortages) throughout the remainder of the decade.

At some point, after decades of civil unrest and rising tensions, a group of Edonian military officials attempted a coup d'état, occupying the city hall in the heart of the country's capital. Ironically, this failed attempt had temporarily brought about more stability to the capital than had been present under the official administration.[1] Quickly losing public support due to his failures, the Prime Minister of Edonia dissolved the country's parliament and eliminated any form of effective democracy (representative or otherwise), leaving only a cabinet of like-minded politicians to serve as the sole official party of Edonia.

In a futile attempt to strengthen relations with the European Union by appearing to be in control of the country's unrest, the Prime Minister used his unrivaled control over the country's legislature to suppress civil liberties. While this temporarily granted a period of forced stability, it only fueled resentment from his remaining political opponents and the country's struggling underclass. Though many of the figures that had staged the earlier coup had been hunted down and prosecuted, some anti governmental extremists remained and quickly allied themselves with the impoverished and disillusioned populace, leading to the formation of the Edonian Liberation Army.[1]

Civil War[]

In 2010, the situation escalated into war between the Edonian government forces and the populist "La Vita Nuova" militia, the latter of whom were well-supplied and hired mercenaries (such as Jake Muller) to their cause.[2][3] This escalation of violence occurred almost simultaneously with a similar revolt occurring in the Eastern Slav Republic, which saw the full scale use of biological weapons obtained illegally through black market. Thus, the Edonian rebels sought out bio-organic weapons for use in their own offensive.[1]

By 2012, the guerillas were in control of much of the country's territory, moving out of the mountains and into an urban offensive. While the city hall itself was being used as a base of operations, at least one military base had also been captured, with the ELA gaining control of tanks, railway guns and planes, the latter of which they would use for parachute drops.[4] The ELA was then contacted by Carla Radames and Neo Umbrella, offering the organization three Ogroman bioweapons and the (then-unnamed) C-Virus under the guise of being a "performance enhancer". The latter of which would lead to the ultimate downfall of the insurgent army, as those infected with the virus devolved into the aggressively homicidal J'avo who would go on to massacre uninfected ELA troops and civilians alike.[5][6]

The country soon deteriorated into a full-on warzone with the arrival of the Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance, who were tasked to intervene in the crisis. Although the organization had swiftly handled a prior outbreak of C-Virus zombies at the Marhawa School in Kudahnkan, they were unprepared for the resistance they would face from the J'avo, whom (unlike the aforementioned zombies or even the Majini) were extremely intelligent, heavily armed, well organized and capable of instantaneously healing injuries or mutating into even deadlier forms.[7] Thus, the conflict would draw out into a grueling campaign lasting well into the winter and resulting in high casualties on both sides.[3][7] This ongoing conflict utilized heavy artillery and caused the widespread devastation and bombing of several major towns and cities, destroying cultural landmarks and eliminating access to trade routes, basic utilities and much of Edonia's core infrastructure.[4]

Ultimately, the BSAA were able to score a decisive victory in the Edonian War on Christmas Eve thanks to decorated operatives Chris Redfield and Piers Nivans and a unit consisting of Ben Airhart, Carl Alfonso, Finn Macauley and Andy Walker.[7][8] Unfortunately, the victory wasn't without its costs, as the entire unit was wiped out by a Needle Bomb almost immediately after securing City Hall, with Redfield and Nivans only narrowly escaping.[9] Upon regaining consciousness in the hospital, Redfield suffered from post-traumatic amnesia and he was unable to remember who he was or what occurred.[10] However, wracked by an overwhelming amount of guilt, Redfield ran away from the hospital and fled over the border before anyone could check on him.[6]

Aftermath[]

By late 2014, the U.N. had established an ongoing humanitarian relief effort in the country and the Security Council passed a motion to keep stationing workers in the Republic of Edonia, as reported on by The Dulvey Daily.[11]

Further notes[]

  • The Republic of Edonia may possibly be named after Edonis, a nearby region in northeastern Greece.
  • The primary language spoken in the country is a regional variation of "BCS" (Bosnian, Croatian, Serbian), although English seems to be a prevalent language in the country as well.
  • While the exact location or size of the Republic of Edonia is unknown, the official JP website places the country within roughly the same geographical region as Kosovo, placing the Dinaric Alps to the east and the Šar Mountains to the south.[3]
