"The countdown to destruction had begun, yet hope remained. As confusion and anarchy tore the city apart, the time had come to stand up and fight."
— In-game description

"End of the road", known in Japan as Breakthrough (突破Toppa?). is the fifth and final story scenario in Resident Evil Outbreak File #2. Its objective is to escape Raccoon City with or without the cure.

Plot

In the early hours of October 1, 1998, Linda, an Umbrella researcher, argues with a USS (Umbrella Security Service) mercenary, Rodriguez. She needs to head back to a laboratory to get something very important. Rodriguez gives in, warning Linda that he will be "the first out the door", and will leave her in the city if she takes too long.

Meanwhile at Umbrella's Raccoon City headquarters (Umbrella R&D Center), a refugee by the name of David King kills a zombie with an iron pipe, saving a researcher named Carter. Linda arrives immediately afterwards and is nearly killed by the man, who mistakes her as another zombie. After two other refugees show up, Carter reveals that he and Linda are looking for the cure of the t-Virus.[quotes 1] Suddenly, a biohazard alarm sounds and the facility goes into a lockdown just as Linda is about to leave with a sample. Linda and Carter split up and depart to perform their tasks; Linda goes to an adjacent laboratory while Carter retreats to a special lab on the second floor.

The three refugees search the facility for a keycard, which they find on the body of a researcher killed by the source of the lockdown; a team of Hunter Rs. After retrieving the card, the three gain entrance to a large storage room; in it are three more Hunters. Luckily, an extremely powerful laser system acts as a barrier, stopping the creatures from attacking the survivors. Heading upstairs to an adjacent room, they find Carter.

Inside his laboratory, Carter types on a computer near a storage tube; he is trying to open it. Asking the group to write an MO disk, they comply and head to the mainframe, where the data they need is written with the command program. Finishing in the lab, they return it to Carter, who inserts it into the computer.

The storage tube slowly opens as Linda enters the room. The occupant is the Tyrant R; a former human, and based on its programming, it cannot attack the survivors. The Tyrant storms out of the window into the "cage" below, quickly slaughtering the Hunters before leaving. Carter reveals to Linda that a bomb was implanted in the Tyrant's neck, and that he is in possession of the detonator in case something goes wrong. Although Carter is impressed by the former Human, who calls it a "masterpiece", Linda treats it with suspicion. The Tyrant overhears Carter, who has underestimated its intelligence, and plots its betrayal.

When Linda, Carter and the trio reach the east exit, the creature makes its move; it knocks Carter to the floor and shatters the sample. Linda attempts to help Carter, but as she does so, the Tyrant punches Linda in the face, knocking her over the ledge and making her fall into the sewers deep below. A dying Carter struggles to reach the detonator, but it accidentally falls into the sewers where Linda fell, just before the Tyrant delivers a final blow, killing Carter. Now turning its attention to David, the trio runs away from it after picking up Carter's keycard from his body, hoping to find another way out of the building.

Crawling under a destroyed door, the trio makes it to the elevator and escape into the sewers using Carter's keycard. Believing they had finally lost it, the relentless Tyrant is revealed to have simply walked back to east exit, where it killed Carter, and jumped off the ledge; it lands in front of the three and begins a second pursuit.

The trio escapes the creature by going through deserted tunnels, finding Carter's detonator on the way. The trio finds Linda, who has survived the fall; she reveals that the t-Virus, which has ravaged Raccoon City, is in fact an experiment made by Umbrella. Linda knows how to remake the sample, which is presumably the only known cure of the virus, but "none of that means a damn thing unless I [she] can make my [her] critical path out of here [there]". Water suddenly gushes from the outer sewers and floods the room, sweeping Linda and/or the trio away.

Emerging in the street In front of Apple Inn, Linda crosses the street to find shelter inside the hotel; however, on the highway above, a U.B.C.S. (Umbrella Biohazard Countermeasure Service) sniper named Arnold shoots Linda in the right leg, mistaking her as a zombie. Unsure of whom he hit, Arnold has little care and simply looks out for more targets.[quotes 2] An Umbrella executive, Tommy, reminds Arnold of his orders, which are to secure "the Package" and rescue the survivors. With no care about that, Arnold aims his rifle into Tommy's direction and fires... striking a zombie in the head directly behind Tommy. Arnold remarks that it was the one hundredth person he shot.

Also escaping the sewers, David and the other two are forced to dodge Arnold's gunfire while crossing the street to save the wounded Linda, who has made it inside the hotel. The UBCS team planted several mines in the area to make sure they catch Rodriguez, but they did not had in mind that survivors would be crossing the areas with the mines in them. To make matters even worse, the Tyrant has also escaped the sewers and has mutated into a 12' tall Super Tyrant, beginning a third pursuit.

While Linda and the trio are on their way back to Rodriguez, Arnold has left the highway and onto a nearby office. Just as Linda and the trio enter the office building, Arnold confronts Tommy for not warning him of what the government's intention really is: to bomb the city in a missile strike, with them still in it. Arnold leaves, knowing that staying any longer could surely mean certain death. Tommy attempts to follow, but is unable to catch Arnold. Arnold leaves his men with Tommy to complete the objective; to capture Rodriguez and retrieve "the Package", something that Rodriguez stole from Tommy. Rodriguez overhears the bombing alarm on his radio, and judges that he cannot wait for Linda any longer. Linda and the trio have only three minutes to reach the helicopter before Rodriguez departs.

Canonically evacuating without Linda and the survivors, Rodriguez is surprised to see Tommy aiming a rocket launcher at him from the rooftop of the office building. Swerving to avoid the rocket, Rodriguez narrowly escapes death. However, the cable securing "the Package" to the helicopter loosens, and it falls into the highway below.

As Rodriguez flies away, several U.B.C.S. mercenaries surround "the Package". Suddenly, the huge box is dented from the inside. A mercenary is pulled to the ground, with the others firing at the attacker before they too fall. Their bodies are pulled into the increasing mass of the creature named Nyx, which feeds by absorbing its victims directly into its form, something that increases its already large size and strength. The name of the creature derives from the Greek goddess of the night.

Linda and the trio head upstairs, unaware of the new threat. Large pools of blood, a few weapons and ammunition reveal that the remaining mercenaries were unable to defend themselves from the perils inside the office building.

After reaching the rooftop, the trio jumps into the highway; seeing nothing at first, the mutated Tyrant R, which is still alive, climbs onto the highway from the other side, almost beginning a fourth and final pursuit. Suddenly, it is pulled back as Nyx absorbs into its body; the Tyrant is unable to free itself. The survivors are forced to defeat Nyx through the numerous weapons laying around; a Rocket Launcher, an Assault Rifle, a Submachine Gun, Carter's detonator, a Survival Knife and a huge pile of ammunition. Defeated, Nyx dissolves into a pool of acid, freeing the dead mercenaries and an incapacitated Tyrant R.

Finally defeating the abomination, the survivors make a makeshift bridge for Linda to climb onto the highway. The trio and Linda drive a military transport truck and escape the city moments before it is destroyed by the US Air Force's Sterilization Operation (Mission Code XX). They reunite with Rodriguez at an overlook, and Linda, although saddened by how it had to end, feels pride in herself that she knows how to remake the lost sample, saying, "that's the one gift we humans have... we can rebuild".

After the events in Raccoon City, Linda and Yoko Suzuki, another Umbrella employee, decide to testify against Umbrella in court.

Walkthrough

Advance through the corridor. In Central Passage 1, follow the path below and check the panel that is beside the corpse. Memorize the three numbers covered in blood and continue down the hallway. Take the next door on the right to get to the East Passage 1. Now head to the Reference room. Grab the Examination Room Key, memorize the compound's map by checking the computer and make your way back to the Waiting room and use the Examination Room Key to enter the Examination room. Linda will be present in this room, and she'll tell you to find Carter. Go to the door at the back.

Go to the end of the hallway, there you'll find a panel. Insert the match code by the three numbers you have memorized previously to reveal a passage, but the code is randomized so you'll need to retry several times. Take the door prior to this passage into the West passage. Go down the path and enter the same code on the panel to be revealed another passage. Continue to the penultimate hall door to get to the Laser Emission Room. Check the computer next to the glass and select " Yes" to disable the lasers.

Go back to the first passage and enter the first door. Head quickly so that the lasers do not activate before you go through the Laser Emission Room beyond the thick glass. Go through the door to the right. You will be on Central Passage 3. Grab the ID Card Lv1 next to the fire. Now you'll be able to access any security doors which requires the ID Card Lv1. Use the card to enter the " Experimentation chamber". From now you can replace the ID Card Lv1 for any other item. Follow this room, taking care not to touch the lasers. Go up the stairs and enter the Observation Mezzanine where you can find Carter. He will ask you to bring an encrypted MO Disk, which can be found on the desk behind him. Enter the next door to find a typewriter to save your progress.

Go down the stairs, Follow the path down and enter the double door. Advance through the hallway and enter the next door into the Mainframe room. Use the MO Disk on the machinery to turn it into MO Disk (Code A).

Return to the Observation Mezzanine room and use it on the machine next to the table to turn it into MO Disk (Code B). Give the item to Carter and see the following cutscene when the Tyrant is awaken. After the scene, return to the East Passage 1. Proceed to the East Passage 3 along with the Tyrant who serves as your temporary ally, killing any Hunter R you encounter, cross the corridor and take the last door (with red light). You should find a Nursery room where a crowbar is present. Grab it and use it on a wall that looks weak. Inside is a room with a Grenade Launcher Model.

Proceed down the hall to see a scene. Now the Tyrant will turn against you; it is advisable to evade him all along since you probably have not enough ammo. Take the ID Card Lv2 from Carter's corpse and return through the door in the back. Go quickly to where you found the Model Grenade Launcher. Run down the path, use the card in the panel and enter. You will be in Passage in front of elevator. Cross the hallway. Go through the next door into the Draining Area. A scene will play where Linda is found unconscious at the bottom of the Draining Area. Continue along the path until the Tyrant appears in front of you. Evade him at all costs and head to the other side.

Continue through the next door. You should find the Bomb Switch lying around the ground. With this weapon you can overthrow the Tyrant, but it will alter the course of the scenario. If you do that, you have to perform a few extra tasks in the sewers and confront the Tyrant R early. If you choose not to kill him now, keep it in your inventory. Cross the bridge and enter the door to the Floodgate Control Room. Push the first box up toward the yellow circle. When the floor collapsed, drop down the hole.

Beware not to get poisoned by giant spider infesting the basements. Right now, your current objective is to reunite with Linda through the basements and caves circling the underground section. Once you find Linda, approach her to see a conversation scene. Eventually the sewers will be flooded, and you'll need to look for another way to escape. You should find a Valve Handle around the place where Linda was. Take it and bring it to an emergency ladder. Below the ladder is a hole to place the valve in. Put it into the hole and operate it to get the ladder down.

Climb the ladder to reach the Main Street South. Head to the dark passageway and the Tyrant will appear. You can either choose to kill him using firearms, the Bomb Switch, or simply escape him. Once you escape/kill the Tyrant R, go to Main Street North and ascend the sidewalk right next to the stairs. go up the stairs and cross the bridge. You'll eventually see a cutscene where Linda is being injured by a sniper.

Once you regain control of the character again, you should be very careful. From here on, the grounds will be scattered by landmines, exploding when the character steps on it. You should find a Mine Detector prior to the landmines-infested area. This item will beep when a mine is near, so it's advisable to equip it during the course of the game. Enter through the gray door to get to the Office Building Warehouse. Ascend the stairs and enter the door. When progressing through the hallway you will see another scene.

When the scene ends, you must make a decision. A countdown will begin and you will have to choose between two options. First, head to the helicopter before the time runs out and finish the scenario without having to battle the final boss. Second, wait until the timer finish counting. If you choose the first option, go to the helicopter as soon as possible while evading any enemies you encounter. If you choose the second option, either intentionally missed the helicopter or do not make it in time, you'll face the final boss.

You can also bring Linda with you, either to the second choice or the first one. If you head directly to the Apple Inn, you should find her there, but the grounds will once again filled with landmines so be careful. With Linda or not, if you missed the helicopter, go back to the Office Building and head to the roof. You should be able to jump to the highway near the roof by pressing the X button at the right time and bash it to help the character to get up.

Proceed forward to battle the final boss, Nyx, a combined abomination of zombies and monsters. The creature is both dangerous in the front and the back, due to its ability to utilize its tentacles and slime bombs as deadly weapons. The fastest way to kill Nyx is using the Rocket Launcher (or Magnum, if you find the latter). By dealing massive damage, it'll eventually kneel and expose its mutated heart. Use the Rocket Launcher or the Magnum to defeat Nyx (the Rocket Launcher will finish it off by one shot). When Nyx die, if Linda is present, go to where you jumped to get here and use the nearby board to form a bridge. Bring Linda and enter the truck to finish the scenario.
