BIOHAZARD THE REAL 2

BIOHAZARD THE REAL 2 (バイオハザード・ザ・リアル2, Baiohazādo za Riaru 2^?) was a screampark attraction at Universal Studios Japan, open from Friday 8 August to Sunday 9 November 2014. It was located within the Palace Theater in the New York section, and was a refurbishment of the previous year's Resident Evil-themed attraction of the same name.^[1]

Background[]

"Raccoon City has become a "necropolis" due to the spread of the t-Virus. You, one of the few left alive, aim to escape from Raccoon City. The only thing you can rely on is the "Shotgun" weapon, and your own power... Can you face countless Zombies and creatures, get the vaccine, and survive safely?"

Following positive reception the previous two USJ events, Capcom collaborated once more. Now under the control of Masachika Kawata, changes were made to be more action-oriented, with the event adding more Zombies to the city. Famitsu took part on a press tour of the event before it opened.^[2] The story to The Real 2 is drawn from Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3: Nemesis - the UBCS is using the Kendo Gun Shop as a hold-up for civilians, who are to be led out to a rendezvous point where they will be evacuated out of the city, but with their numbers dwindling the mercenaries are expecting the civilians to pull their own weight.

The objective of the game, as with The Real, was to advance from one end of Raccoon City to the other. Each player was given a device that would determine the rate of viral production, and after a point they would become a Zombie and lose the game. By collecting Green Herbs they could increase the length of time. To prevent players simply running from one end to the other, Zombies would appear which would have to be defeated with a Shotgun weighing 1.5 kg, a change from The Real where it was a handgun.^[2]

Participants began The Real 2 outside the Kendo Gun Shop where the UBCS would arm them, with one remaining to wait for more civilians and another leading them out to the rendezvous point. They'd then be led out into the alleyways, where they would be mobbed by Zombies while passing the derelict remains of an Umbrella helicopter that crashed into a building. Their UBCS guide would point out bags on the floor containing useful items and take them further through the city.

BIOHAZARD THE REAL 2 - Raccoon City Food Cart

The Raccoon City Food Cart (ラクーンシティ・フードカート, rakūnshiti fūdokātodesu^?) was established in front of the pizza parlor in New York, offering Resident Evil-themed food and drink. Food included:

"Raccoon City Green Herb wrap set" (ラクーンシティ・グリーンハーブ・ラップ・セット, rakūnshiti gurīnhābu rappu setto^?) - a wrapped sausage coated in a green sauce. A copy of the Raccoon City Times was available with this order.^[2]
"Green Herb Drink ~Lemon Soda~", a green coloured drink.^[2]^[3]

USJ sold Resident Evil merchandise at its Wonder Pix store, which was decorated with posters and replica costumes of characters such as Leon S. Kennedy, Sherry Birkin and HUNK. Visitors could get their photo in front of a green-screen to get an image of themselves in Raccoon City.^[2] Customers could also purchase an Umbrella Corporation ID card and neckstrap to wear.^[4]

Reception[]

In the first month of it opening, THE REAL 2 reached 110,000 visitors. The first person to win the game was declared on 4 September, 28 days into the event.^[5]
