20th Anniversary

Resident Evil 20th Anniversary, known in Japan as BIOHAZARD 20TH ANNIVERSARY (CAPCOM：バイオハザード 20周年記念公式サイト^?), is a special event spanning 2016 in honour of the 20th anniversary (March 22, 2016) of the release of Resident Evil on the PlayStation.

Events and releases[]

As part of the 20th Anniversary in 2016: Resident Evil Zero HD Remaster and Resident Evil Origins Collection were released in January and BIOHAZARD THE STAGE DVD released in February in Japan, while Resident Evil: Umbrella Corps and Resident Evil: Vendetta were released later that year along with the in-development Resident Evil 2 remake.^[1]

The release of Resident Evil 4, Resident Evil 5, and Resident Evil 6 on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One later in the year was also announced as being part of the 20th Anniversary celebration.^[2]^[3] Aside from the slight graphical enhancement and 60fps, both Resident Evil 5 and 6 received the previously PC-exclusive variant of The Mercenaries, No Mercy. Resident Evil 5 includes a remixed collection of stages in The Mercenaries mode titled: The Mercenaries United.

On June 13/14, the Resident Evil Ambassador program was launched.

Several other merchandise (such as clothes and umbrella phone case) are also offered as part of the celebration. On the PlayStation Network, multiple avatars based on the 20th anniversary were added into the store.

Resident Evil: Bio Terror was announced as an upcoming VR on rails shooter arcade game to be shown exclusively at Dubai's Hub Zero gaming complex. Resident Evil 7: Biohazard was also announced on June 13, 2016, in E3 2016 as part of the 20th Anniversary.

In late 2016 a parody re-telling of the original Resident Evil for smartphones was released in Japan, titled BAKAHAZA.

Lineup[]

As of 14 June 2016, the 20th Anniversary site lists Resident Evil 7, Umbrella Corps and Resident Evil 0 HD as "20TH ANNIVERSARY TITLES", while Resident Evil 4, 5 and 6 are listed as "20TH ANNIVERSARY PROJECT".^[1] While the Japanese 20th site lists all of the above and a bottom "other" lineup which includes: MUSICAL BIOHAZARD ~ Voice of Gaia ~, Biohazard Vendetta, BIOHAZARD THE STAGE and Capcom Cafe.

The Japanese site features more pages and content such as Event, Games, Goods, Comment and History. The comment page includes the site developers quote, the interview videos and arts submitted by fans from Japan.

On March 22, 2016, the Resident Evil series will celebrate its twentieth anniversary!

Many games have been added to the series since the original Resident Evil was released back in 1996, and we would like to take this opportunity to say a special thanks to all of the fans around the world for the support that has kept us motivated over the years.

To celebrate this momentous year, we'll be releasing the HD remaster of Resident Evil 0 in early 2016, and, following that, we'll also be bringing you a new entry to the series: Resident Evil: Umbrella Corps.

Of course, we also have the Resident Evil 2 remake and various other projects in the works too!

We hope you're looking forward to what we have in store, and to the next steps on this twenty-year journey that was made possible thanks to your support.

Resident Evil Celebrates 20 Years

20 years ago on March 22, 1996, Resident Evil burst onto the gaming scene. Since then the series has gone on to become one of the most successful gaming franchises of all time selling over 66 million copies worldwide. Hollywood feature film releases, merchandise, attractions and events across the globe reinforce the fact the series continues to infect the hearts of Survival Horror fans everywhere.

It is not often that a franchise enjoys such prolific success, with the series revolutionising the ‘survival horror' genre, but there can be no doubt that the lasting and widespread popularity of Resident Evil is all thanks to the passionate support of gamers and Resident Evil fans. Thank you so much!

The 20th anniversary may have just begun, but the Resident Evil team is already hard at work to deliver some amazing new surprises. It's going to be an exciting year!
