The phrase "Machine gun" is a generic term for any weapon that utilizes fully-automatic fire.

In the Resident Evil series, Machine Gun is the designation for Submachine guns, Assault Rifles, Light Machine guns & Heavy Machine guns. These weapons often are relatively hard to obtain, have a somewhat limited supply of ammunition, and do less damage per shot that other firearms in general bar handguns.

While a game may feature machine guns that use a variety of different caliber rounds, the ammo collected by the player might very well be used in all machine guns, so as to keep the game from becoming too complicated.

Machine Guns can be sorted into several different categories:

Sub-Machine Guns[]

A Sub-Machine Gun is a fully automatic weapon that fires pistol-sized cartridges. These weapons often do less damage per round, but feature a higher rate of fire.

To avoid same ammo usage problems with Handguns in the games; SMG's use custom pistol ammo, different from handgun bullets (an exception is the Submachine gun of the Outbreak series, which uses the same 9mm ammo as handguns).

Assault Rifles[]

Firing a more powerful and more accurate round than a sub-machine gun; often comparable to handgun in terms of per shot damage or even moreso, the Assault Rifle is a lethal combination of range and firepower. These weapons are often a much more desired weapon in Resident Evil, although the sheer tempo of which it expends ammunition can lead to shortage of ammunition, forcing the player to nevertheless conserve even with their somewhat generous ammo per pickup count.

Light Machine Gun[]

A compromise between an assault rifle and a sub-machine gun, the General Purpose Machine Gun, or Light Machine Gun, as it is also known, is designed to give the common foot soldier the kind of firepower that is normally limited to mounted weapons. Sadly, most variety of Light Machine Guns are featured in Operation Raccoon City, where enemies take implausible amount of ammunition to kill regardless.

Heavy Machine Guns[]

A heavy machine gun is potentially the most lethal and effective weapon available. Designed for sustained fire, a massive ammunition reserve, a higher rate of fire, and firing a much larger round than other automatic weapons, a heavy machine gun can turn the tide of a battle if one can overcome it's weighty aim and windup to realize it's true destructive potential.
