Joseph "Joe" Kendo is a Japanese American gunsmith and was the co-owner of Gun Shop Kendo chain and brand with his brother Robert.

Biography[]

Josph Kendo served for many years as a member of the San Fransisco Swat Unit before eventually retiring and oping a custom gun shop called "KENDO" in the suburbs of San Fransisco [1]. A brand name and gun store chain he shared with his brother Robert Kendo who also own and operates another Kendo Gunshop in the Midwestern Town of Raccoon City, in Arklay County.

Work with S.T.A.R.S (1996-1998)[]

In April 1996 due to his many years in SWAT Josph was hired as a trainer for the newly formed Special Tactics and Rescue Service in Racoon city, as while the group hired from various fields, including many with a past in the armed forces, most if not all lacked experience in duties and tactics of a special police unit.[1] Jospeh remained in Racoon city working as the S.T.A.R.S unit's trainer until December of 1997 when his contract expired and he returned to San Fransisco.[2] However upon returning home he was contacted by the Raccoon Police Department who requested he'd build a custom gun for the S.T.A.R.S. unit, which he accepted, that had to meet the following manufacturing conditions.[1]

(1) Use of ammunition...
Generally, in law enforcement agencies, 9mm parabellum (9mmx19mm) ammunition's used. Furthermore, one must consider storage and supply of ammunition; often the SMG (sub-machine gun) cartridge provides strength and durability.

(2) Number of rounds...
Must be able to load 13 or more rounds in the magazine.

(3) Sight...
Durability of fixed types must be considered for quick sighting in close range combat using 3 dot-types.

(4) Accuracy...
Accuracy must be 2 inches (5 cm) or less within 25 yards (23 m). Furthermore, 3,000 additional rounds fired must have equal accuracy.

(5) Function...
In consideration of gunfire from various situations, the trigger action used must be double action. Furthermore, one must be able to operate left to right and an ambidextrous safety is required.

(6) Weight...
Weight must be considered for transport in a long-term combat mission and actual weight excluding ammunition must be 35 ounces (1,000 g) or less.[1]

There were very few gunsmiths in the world who could do the work required to meet the manufacturing conditions. With only certain parts available on the market, with some that could not be combined or work together and would require step-by step all while keeping the strict conditions in mind. Josph Kendo was one of these individuals, who instead of falling to confusion on how to meet the conditions was excited by the challenge they posed.[1]

In February of 1998 Josph returned to Racoon city to present his customized version of the standard Beretta 92FS, the standard handgun for the R.P.D, to Police Chief Brian Irons in his office... (Under construction and Source translation checking.)

were he then 1998 he produced several variations of modified Beretta 92F dubbed the "Samurai Edge", which were given to officers in the Special Tactics and Rescue Service, a special forces police unit stationed in Raccoon City and who were friends of his brother.[3]

In the years following the Raccoon City Destruction Incident, Kendo was approached by Leon S. Kennedy to build another Samurai Edge for him. Kendo turned down the request, but instead developed the "Silver Ghost" exclusively for him.[4] Boosted by his reputation, Kendo wrote and published a book detailing his craft, "Gun Survivalist: A Heavy Firearms Manual for Field Combat Situations". This book was read by BSAA operators, and provided to Ethan Winters for his safehouse.[5]
