MT Framework is a proprietary game engine built by Capcom for the seventh and eight generation consoles. "MT" stands for "Multi-Thread", "Meta-Tools" and "Multi-Target", relating to Capcom's intention to make it their primary game engine for video games development.

History[]

Work on MT Framework began in September 2004 following an internal strategy meeting on the upcoming Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 games consoles. According to Masaru Ijurin, the understanding was that Capcom's previous use of various modifications of older engines was hindering their ability to make hit games, saying "there [was] no future for us except to create Capcom's original game development tools and improve development efficiency".[1]

2006's Lost Planet and Dead Rising were used as the testbeds for the base version of the engine, named "MT Framework 1.0", as well as several proprietary development tools. It was developed to be natively compatible with the Xbox 360, the first of the seventh generation consoles to come out. With the new engine and tools, development time was streamlined and more complex programming could be used.[1] Other games in development at the time like Resident Evil 5 developed their own versions of 1.0, with version 2.0 being used as the standard following its use in Lost Planet 2.[2] Owing to differences in console architecture, spin-off engines were developed for the Wii and Nintendo 3DS, named "MT Framework Lite" and "MT Framework Mobile", respectively.

In 2014 it was decided that MT Framework would be discontinued, citing absurdly long compiling times for the PlayStation 4. Resident Evil 7: Biohazard was developed alongside Capcom's new proprietary engine, named RE Engine.
