At the start of the 20th century, the British Empire held control over this area, where a fort was built. During the Boxer Rebellion instigated by Empress Dowager Cixi, British forces relinquished control. Even though the Eight-Nation Alliance ultimately won the war in September 1901, the British did not return. No longer with any proper governance, the Poisawan area descended into anarchy. With no building authority, locals used the free zoning spaces to erect slums to live in, commonly referred by 21st century visitors as being as labyrinthine in complexity.
In planning for a bioterrorist attack, Carla Radames sold an "experimental drug" to half of the Poisawan slum population, in a similar manner she did with the Edonian Liberation Army. As with the ELA, this drug was in fact the C-Virus. With the Poisawan residents newly infected, she had an army of J'avo to begin the attack.
During the initial bioterror attack several days later, the BSAA headquarters reported the J'avos' arrival in the area to all teams. Chris Redfield and the BSAA Alpha Team made their way through the district in their hunt for the illusive Iluzija.
- Poisawan was initially spelled as "Bosawan" in the English localization, a misspelling of the original term (ポイサワン Poisawan). This was corrected in the first free update released on December 17, 2012.
