The Umbrella Corporation, abreviated as Umbrella Co., is a back market bioweapons organisation which was formed several years after the Raccoon Trials which destroyed conglomerate of the same name. This organisation is known to send highly-trained mercenaries out on missions to recover abandoned bioweapons and bioweapons research to profit Umbrella as the only organization with access to them. Their relationship with the official Umbrella Corporation, the US government-owned successor to Umbrella U.S.A., is also unknown.
Two years after the Global Bioterrorist Attacks, these mercenaries became active in infiltrating quarantined zones, taking advantage of the BSAA's inability to sterilize all sites of bio-terror attacks. One notable mercenary, 3A7, acted under the supervision of Abraham Jackson and Beatrice Bertrand, as they gave him various objectives.
Mercenaries that were part of Umbrella Co. often came into contact with other mercenaries within the locales they were sent to, hired by opposing companies with the same objectives. Quite frequently, independent "Zombie Hunters" were encountered infiltrating the same places for the single purpose of neutralizing B.O.Ws for thrill seeking purposes.
Most of the equipment these mercenaries used was improvised mountain climbing gear, including:
- The "Debrainer" or "Cronus", known only as the "Zombie Beil" (ゾンビバイル Zonbibairu ) in Japan: a modified ice ax intended for destroying the link between the cerebrum and spinal cord.
- The "Tactical Shield", known as the "Bite Guard" (ベイトガード Beitogādo ) in Japan: an armored attachment to the arm which deflects bullets. It contains a sticky resin which can prevent zombies getting any closer should they get stuck.
- The "Terrain Spikes", known as the "Zombie Climbing Irons" (ゾンビアイゼン Zonbiaizen ) in Japan: these studded boots are used to destroy the heads of crawling and downed zombies to prevent any further attacks.
- The "Zombie Jammer" (ゾンビジャマー Zonbijamā ): a device which emits electromagnetic radiation designed to disorient nearby zombies, thus preventing the user from being attacked. The official website recommends destroying an enemy's jammer to prevent them escaping.
In terms of weaponry, mercenaries carry firearms that don't hinder their mobility such as PDWs, compact shotguns and hand-to-hand combat.
