Researcher's Will is a file that can be found in Resident Evil.

Location

In either the original 1996 Resident Evil or the 2002 Remake, the file can be found inside the Researcher's private room at Spencer Mansion. Note that depending on the character you are playing as, a portion of the letter may (Jill) or may not (Chris) be torn off. It is implied with the former that it was torn off to eliminate any incriminating evidence to one of the S.T.A.R.S. members' ties to Umbrella.

Chris's Scenario

My dear Alma,

The fact that you received this letter is both joy and a sadness to me. I could not even talk to you because of that guy in the Sunglasses. Alma, be calm and read this.

I think I've told you that I moved to a pharmaceutical company's lab. They headhunted me. Last month, there was an accident in the lab and the virus we were studying escaped.

All my colleagues who were infected by the virus are dead. To be accurate, they've become the living dead. They still wander around. Some of them are knocking on my room door desperately right now. But there's no sign of intelligence in their eyes.

That cursed virus takes way all humanity from the human brain. Love, joy, sorrow, fear, humor... eternally.

And Alma, even the memories of the days I spent with you...

Yes, I'm infected. I did everything I could, but I could only delay the progress by a few days. The most frightening thing is, that I forget more about you by the day.

So I chose a peaceful death, rather than becoming the living dead.

Within an hour, I will have entered my eternal sleep. I do hope you'll understand my decision...

Good Bye and Forever Yours,

Martin Crackhorn

Researcher's Will

There is a letter.

June 3, 1998
My dearest Alma.

Let me first apologize for not being able to call you. A man wearing sunglasses didn't permit any phone calls. Sorry Alma.

I sit here trying to think of where to begin, of how to explain in a few simple words all that's happened in my life since we last spoke, and already I fail.

I hope this letter finds you well, and that you'll forgive the tangents of my pen; this isn't easy for me.

Even as I write, I can feel the simplest of concepts slipping away, lost to feelings of despair and confusion - but I have to tell you what's in my heart before I can rest. Alma, please believe that what I'm telling you is the truth.

The entire story would take hours for me to tell you, and time is short, so accept these things as fact: last month there was an accident in the lab and the virus we were studying leaked.

All my colleagues who were infected are dead or dying, and the nature of the disease is such that those still living have lost their senses. This virus robs its victims of their humanity, forcing them in their sickness to seek out and destroy life.

Even as I write these words, I can hear them, pressing against my door like mindless, hungry animals.

Alma, I have tried to survive only to see you again. But my efforts only delayed the inevitable; I am infected, and there is no cure for what will follow - except to end my life before I lose the only thing that separates me from them.

My love for you.

In an hour I'll have entered my eternal sleep where there is peace. Please understand. Please know that I'm sorry.

A letter is slipped inside. The top part of the letter is torn off. The rest of the letter is legible.

Analysis

The letter in both the original and the 2002 remake contains a strongly-worded hint at Albert Wesker's ties to Umbrella and the mansion in the opening paragraph, foreshadowing his true role as the mole within S.T.A.R.S. This is further hinted at in Jill's scenario, where the first paragraph (second to tenth pages in the REmake) is torn off, presumably either by Wesker himself or by Barry Burton under Wesker's orders.
