Resident Evil was advertised in the United States with a commercial showing gameplay footage set to rock music. A separate and longer E3 2001 trailer focused more on cutscenes and showcasing new environments.

Capcom advertised Resident Evil through Japanese, European, and American websites. The Japanese site included a developer's blog and demo footage showcasing the game engine. The American and European sites featured a timeline of S.T.A.R.S.' history. However, without supervision from the Japanese development team, the two sites incorporated lore from the S.D. Perry novels.[1]
