DeCandido relied heavily on accurate US road maps when writing Extinction to describe a realistic route for the characters to drive through, and what towns they would have come across between scenes. The attention to detail is made very clear in Chapter Four, where DeCandido gives a brief introduction to the modern American road systems, and describes how odd and even-numbered Interstates conform to a north/south and east/west direction, respectively.

Road Route Notes
Interstate 5 Intersects with I-90 in the 'Pacific Northwest'. Alice thinks about the many Interstate highways which blossomed after Route 66.[1]
Interstate 10 Intersects with the I-95 in Florida.[1]
Interstate 65 Alice and Carlos' team got onto the I-65 at West Lafayette, Indiana, switching to the I-94 at Gary, Indiana.[2]
Interstate 70 Baltimore to Cove Fort, Utah Alice thought of it as being one of the two best-traveled Interstates.[1] Claire's convoy obtained an Enco fuel truck on the I-70, somewhere in Missouri.

Interstate 80 New York to San Francisco Alice thought of it as being one of the two best-traveled Interstates. It intersected with the I-215 in Utah; Alice believed there to be virtually nothing in the Utah section until Salt Lake City. She left the I-80 to get to the KLKB building.[1]
