Not to be confused with Special Tactics And Rescue Service.

The Special Tactics and Rescue Squads (or S.T.A.R.S.) were an elite unit within the Raccoon City Police Department.[1]

History[]

S.T.A.R.S. was established by the RPD as a special forces unit to tackle more extreme emergencies the department as a whole was not trained to handle. By September 2002, several such squads existed. When Raccoon City suffered an outbreak of T-virus, the S.T.A.R.S. squads were deployed all over the city to halt the Undead and rescue civilians.

At least seven officers were present at Raven's Gate Bridge where they aided Umbrella's security force in preventing a stampede while refugees were tested for infection. When Undead began attacking the bridge, however, these officers were forced away at gunpoint. Two of them, Jill Valentine and Peyton Wells, split from their colleagues and took shelter at Raven's Gate Church, where they allied with Alice, an escaped Umbrella test-subject.

Another squad drove towards Park Street and, allying with UBCF mercenaries, attempted to wipe out large groups of the Undead; this plan failed and saw the total loss of the squad and most of the mercenaries present. A third squad, led by Captain Henderson, fortified Westwood Theater where they intended to hold out until help could arrive. Though they were more successful than the other squads, they became an easy target for the Nemesis bio-weapon, which had orders to kill S.T.A.R.S. officers.

Following the loss of these squads, and the total collapse of RPD cohesion, Valentine became the sole survivor of the force after successfully escaping the city by helicopter from Raccoon City Hall. Any S.T.A.R.S. officers left in the city were killed in the subsequent detonation of a nuclear weapon.

Uniform[]

The standard S.T.A.R.S. uniform consisted of a white shirt beneath a olive drab tactical vest, khaki trousers, shoulder and knee pads, and black gloves.
