Retribution - Suburbia after the test 1

Suburbia was a testing environment within the wider Umbrella Prime complex in Siberia. Alongside the Times Square environment, the two represented very different aspects of the United States were biowarfare could take place without endangering American citizens.[1]

History[]

Suburbia was created to simulate biowarfare in an American suburban environment. Unique among the test environments, rather than place itself within a recreation of a city centre like the Moscow, Berlin, Times Square and Shibuya environments, Suburbia used Sundown Meadows as its inspiration, taking the form of the suburbs on the outskirts of Raccoon City.[1]

As was standard in Umbrella Prime, Suburbia was populated with people and objects appropriate to its environment, in this case an assortment of mostly white clones and American vehicles appropriate for a middle-class environment. At the edge of Suburbia was a simplistic wall projection of a field stretching out to the horizon, and ceiling lighting which could appropriately resemble a skyline. This design was a requirement to not only result in accurate biowarfare simulations but to prevent the escape of clones.[1]

Final day of operation[]

The final simulation played out in Suburbia called for an early morning raid on civilians as they got ready for work. The clones were led into Suburbia to designated houses, several of whom infected with T-virus. Each would play a character in this setting, having their own memory implants which gave them an identity, purpose in life and a relationship with others. This included young families with a day of school and work planned out as well as older people planning yard work. Meanwhile the Undead clones would begin their attack, spreading the virus around until the end of the scenario, where it would appear they were set to be killed and the facility cleaned for the next simulation.[1]

During that test, two clones survived the test undetected, Becky and Rain. Becky was a child model customised with a hearing condition who's family were attacked in their house at the start of the simulation. While Todd was killed and turned, she escaped with Alice to another house where she hid. Alice herself died protecting her from Undead pursuers, including Todd himself. Rain meanwhile was given keys to a car as part of her role, and attempted to rescue Alice and Becky during their escape but was quickly incapacitated in a collision. Rain was ignored entirely by the Undead and mistaken for dead.[1]

In the hours after the test ended, Rain herself left to get help and stumbled through the facility exit and finding her way into Moscow, though her understanding of the situation was kept limited by design. Becky meanwhile was rescued by Ada Wong and Alice, another clone that resembled her mother. Alice herself had escaped custody at the facility and was being tracked by the cloned security team, which consisted of doppelgängers of Todd and Rain among others. A shootout ensued which destroyed one of the houses, though the three fugitives escaped.[1]

Suburbia itself was destroyed a short time later when the facility's hull was compromised, leading to an avalanche of water flooding the room.[1]

Architecture[]

Retribution - Umbrella Prime map 1

Suburbia lay in the centre of Umbrella Prime. As such, rather than using access corridors it was possible to travel from Moscow to New York, Tokyo, Berlin and others by passing through it.

Further notes[]

  • The Suburbia sequence is explored in greater detail in the novelization, where Alice recognizes several people caught up in the chaos. June Grady, a neighbour, who is attacked and killed by her formerly crippled husband Raymond Grady. The Todd Undead also survives beyond the simulation, only to be killed when the facility is destroyed and flooded.
