The Tokyo Game Show (東京ゲームショウ Tōkyō Gēmu Shō?), commonly known as TGS, is a video game expo / convention held annually in the Makuhari Messe, in Chiba, Japan. It is presented by the Computer Entertainment Supplier's Association (CESA) and the Nikkei Business Publications, Inc. It is used by many international video game developers to show off their upcoming games and game-related hardware, though the main focus is on the Japanese market rather than overseas. Like Gamescom, the Tokyo Game Show allows the general public to attend during the final two days.

Resident Evil and TGS

The world's first look at Resident Evil 2 was at the second TGS 1996, the first year of the convention.[notes 1] Only ten seconds of footage was shown of what would later become Biohazard 1.5; an outlined player fighting a large group of zombies in otherwise total-blackness. Promotional documents named the two lead characters as Leon S. Kennedy and Elza Walker.[1] The game made a re-appearacne at TGS 97 in the following September; the "BIOHAZARD 2 THEATER" also showcased a leather jacket branded with the BIOHAZARD logo.[2]

  1. RESEARCH ON BIOHAZARD 2 final edition refers to the time as being in the Summer. However, the pre-2004 format held TGS in the Spring and Autumn. It can be assumed that was the autumnal TGS, and was mis-attributed to late-Summer.
