The United States biological weapons program was a US military project which researched into the weaponisaton of biological weapons. Started in 1948 at the beginning of the Cold War, research into bio-agents such as anthrax was carried out until the ratifaction of the Biological Weapons Convention in 1972.
The US military was secretly a buyer of bioweapons from Umbrella Pharmaceuticals in direct breach of the 1972 treaty. Concerned over Umbrella's dealings with other nations, the US hired Dr. Albert Wesker, a former Umbrella virologist, to aid them in a competing program. By 1998 their ultimate goal became the acquisition of the G-Virus from Dr. William Birkin, which they believed would guarantee American dominance. The program is believed to have been secretly discontinued following the Raccoon City Destruction Incident and the scandals arising from it.
