This comes from none other than Capcom’s Keiji Inafune, who is the Global Head of Production at Capcom. He also served as executive producer on various Resident Evil and Onimusha titles and producer of the Dead Rising titles and Street Fighter IV. Oh, and he is largely credited with creating Mega Man, whom he helped design (the character).

In speaking with a Spanish magazine at an event for Dead Rising 2, he spoke about Resident Evil 6. Being quoted as saying, essentially:

“You will hear about Resident Evil 6 from Capcom shortly. We want to get the game on store shelves as quickly as possible, given the great success of Resident Evil 5.” [My edit based on the Google translation].

This isn’t the first time the game has been spoken of, it was mentioned in the past by Resident Evil 5 producer Jun Takeuchi that Resident Evil 6 will completely reboot the series. That’s after Resident Evil 5 saw HUGE success, having sold over 5 million copies worldwide as of December of last year.

As much as I was a fan of Resident Evil 4 and 5 (BIG fan. I love those games), I am an arguably bigger fan of the classics (if you couldn’t tell from my Resident Evil Remake review and Resident Evil 2 review. I also wrote a Resident Evil 4 review). I can only hope that Capcom returns to the survival horror roots of the series while still keeping some of the action that has made these modern titles so great. But the horror factor is significantly lacking in 4 and 5 IMHO, and I can only hope that they rectifiy it by embracing the classic style of Resident Evil’s 0, 1, 2 and 3.

And in semi-related news, Resident Evil CREATOR (who’s latest game is Platinum Games’ Vanquish) has stated that he thinks it will be another 10 years before motion controls (i.e. Wii Remote, Xbox 360 Kinect, PlayStation Move) become “mainstream”. Even though it’s arguable that they already are considering the success of the Wii.

To quote Mikami: “I don’t think motion controls will be in the gaming mainstream in the next ten years. When the technology gets to the point where you can just flick your eyeballs around and the computer can pick it up, you won’t need a controller anymore. Obviously it’s going to take a while to get there.”
