- Warning: Spoilers ahead!
For some it may seem like an eternity ago when the hugely successful Resident Evil was released, a game many still consider to be one of the most important video games ever created. It marked the start of one of the most critically acclaimed game series to date.
But that was sixteen years ago. Over this long period of time, the gaming industry has changed much. Small developers like Capcom became multi-million dollar companies with offices around the globe, and the industry moved from arcade halls to people's homes.
But how did the Resident Evil series fare? Did the series manage to keep up with today's triple A games, or has it lost its touch? I think everybody agrees with me when I say it most certainly hasn't. On the contrary, the series is still alive and kicking today, and the last three games of the series, especially Resident Evil 4, received nothing but positive reviews.
To see how well the series has aged over the last few years, I'll compare the last three games in the series, Resident Evil 4, Resident Evil 5 and Resident Evil Revelations on this blog. But it's just my opinion, so be sure to leave your opinion and favorite Resident Evil game in the comments below!
Atmosphere and locationsEdit
If you ask a random person on the street what they like most about the Resident Evil series, their answer will probably be the atmosphere. After all, without a scary setting and environment, any survival horror game is doomed to fail.
Resident Evil 4 takes place in the small village of El Pueblo, where a cult called Los Iluminados turned the harmless village into a ghost town with Ganados roaming the streets. The player will venture through the small alleys of the town towards the dark castle, a gigantic fortress outside El Pueblo.
Resident Evil 5 is set in the sunny Kijuju in West-Africa, where the player fights their way through Kijuju and eventually reaches Umbrella Africa Research Center and its underground laboratory to find Jill Valentine.
Resident Evil Revelations follows Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine on their travels through Europe to find the bio-terrorist organization called Il Veltro. The player will come face to face the Ooze on board the Queen Zenobia and fight their way inside the Valkoinen Mökki Airport to take down Il Veltro.
Some say a game is only as good as its characters, and the Resident Evil series has plenty of them.
Resident Evil 4's main character is Leon Scott Kennedy, an American agent operating with the U.S. federal government. Formerly, Leon was a police officer with the Raccoon Police Department. He is one of the Resident Evil series main protagonists.
Resident Evil 5 features Chris Redfield and Sheva Alomar. Chris Redfield is an American Special Operations Agent (SOA) of the Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance (B.S.A.A), of which he is a founding member, along with his long-time partner; Jill Valentine. Sheva Alomar is an agent from the Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance's West African branch. She was assigned to the current mission to assist Chris Redfield, who was unfamiliar with the area. A versatile fighter with extensive experience, her ability to use firearms is on par with Chris. She is much smaller and more flexible than Chris, enabling her to perform certain maneuvers that Chris cannot. In turn, this allows Chris to throw her up to high ledges, or over large gaps in order to reach areas or objectives that a lone operative couldn't reach.
Resident Evil Revelations is centered around Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine. Chris Redfield is an American Special Operations Agent (SOA) of the Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance (B.S.A.A), of which he is a founding member, along with his long-time partner; Jill Valentine. Jill Valentine is an American Special Operations Agent (SOA) of the Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance, of which she is a co-founder and one of the original eleven members, making her a respected and high ranking operative of the organization.
And the element that ties all these other items together is - what else? - the story. Without a good story, a game isn't nearly as enjoyable as it could be. Just imagine a storyless Resident Evil? That would leave us with yet another generic shoot-em-'up game. But which game has the best story?
Resident Evil 4's main protagonist is Leon S. Kennedy, one of the few survivors of the Raccoon City incident, who was recruited and trained by the US Government to become a special agent after they learned of his actions in Raccoon City. Now an agent for a special security agency, Leon is sent on a mission to rescue Ashley Graham, the President's daughter, who has been kidnapped by a mysterious cult organization.
Resident Evil 5 starts in 2009, six years after the destruction of Umbrella. Chris Redfield has become a member of the Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance and is sent to investigate possible Bio Organic Weapon smuggling in Africa. Upon arriving in the Kijuju Autonomous Zone, Chris meets his partner, Sheva Alomar of the BSAA West African branch. Together, the two individuals attempt to rendezvous with the BSAA's "Alpha Team", who were attempting to intercept a supposed B.O.W smuggler named Ricardo Irving. However, the situation quickly escalates as their local contact is executed and the pair are forced to fight literal crowds of Las Plagas infested Majini.
Revelations is set in 2005, between the events of Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil 5, Revelations depicts the Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance (BSAA), a counter-terrorism group which Chris and Jill have co-founded, shortly after its establishment. The game begins as the latter and her partner, Parker Luciani, board the Queen Zenobia.
