Latest update: November 19th, 2015

This guide is meant to be a resource for text characters used in NTSC copies of Resident Evil 2. Most images are from the GameCube release, with some from the Nintendo 64 and PlayStation releases.

The focus of this guide is transcribing Japanese characters (hirigana, katakana, and kanji) and finding accurate hex codes for text colors. English characters--such as the English alphabet, punctuation marks, and numbers--can be seen within the images provided.

Standard character set

Psxfin 2014-09-04 19-28-15-272

An example of the standard font.

The main (standard) font used in Resident Evil 2 for subtitles, environment examines, menu text, and the save/load screen. This font set originated in the prototype of RE2 (before being modified for the final release[note 1]) and was reused for Resident Evil 3: Nemesis.

This set uses 5 different colors and uses a large index of English and Japanese characters to fit many different uses throughout the game. The standard color uses 2 texture maps, while each varying color uses 1 map per color. This makes a total of 6 texture maps dedicated to this font.

Japanese text characters

NOTE: Characters I've marked with "N/A" are not present in the game. The reason for this is because they are so similar to other characters (i.e. "he" in hirigana ( he?) compared to "he" in katakana ( he?)) that it would be pointless to make two different characters. Instead, the same characters are used interchangeably by using context clues.

Further notes

  • While "S", "T", "A", "R", and "." are already in the image map, the additional "S.", "T.", "A.", and "R." characters are added. This is to present "S.T.A.R.S." in a cleaner format and also to eliminate the extra spaces caused using the end point in between each letter. It is likely that the "S." character also doubled in use for "Leon S. Kennedy" in subtitles.

Debug character set

RE2B2 Debug menu

The debug menu from the (near final) "beta 2" build.

This character set shares the same image map as the standard character set, but is usually unseen in-game. Like the standard character set, this set also originated in the Resident Evil 2 prototype. There, it is most well known as the set used for the main menu text. Ultimately however, this set is used by the programmers for debug purposes. It is used in the debug menu navigation for all known builds of Resident Evil 2.

A font similar to this one was used in the Nintendo 64 port of the game for in-game files.

Further notes

  • While this font comes in all of the same colors as the standard character set, it appears that only two colors were used on average. Additionally, the PlayStation button icons always remained the same colors.
  • Because this character set only uses one Japanese character, the debug menu always used English characters. For this reason, rooms are given names such as "TUIKA".
  • Curiously enough, this character set uses the yen (¥) character. It is unknown what it could be used for.

Menu character set

Re264 EX files complete

The item menu.

RE2 Mail to Chris 02

The files menu.

RE2 City Area A map 01

The map menu.

This character set is used for the item menu, the files menu, and map menu. For the item menu, this set displays the amount of ammunition loaded into weapons or the number of items carried, such as multiple Ink Ribbons or Small Keys. In addition, it also denotes the type of ammo used for the Grenade Launcher. On the files menu, it is used to display the "forward" and "backward" page arrows for each document. Finally for the map menu, it is used to display the pointer indicating the player's current position.

Computer character set

Rodem 5.0

An example of the computer character set.

This character set is used on the two computers found in-game. The first being the Raccoon City Police Department's Door Lock Service and the second being the Umbrella "Rodem" System Ver 5.0 system found in the underground laboratory. There are no Japanese characters in this set, as the Japanese release uses subtitles for the text on-screen.

Notes

  1. The original font set for "1.5" used some longer English letters which were shortened for the final game and several characters were reorganized or changed on the image maps.
  2. Used to indicate a negative option, such as a missing memory card.
